Finally Getting a New Camera

So I am keeping my D70s as a backup, but I am purchasing a D90 I'm waiting for them to pop into stock (body only)
Quote:
"# Important Notice!# This is a new item. It is not available yet. We have no arrival date at this time."
I plan to run both bodies at once. I'll run my 18-70 on the D90 and my 70-300 on the D90 at events where both are required with no time to swap lenses. In general, the D70s body will just chill in the camera bag. I can't wait Anyone else here shoot the D90?

I know Barry has one. I haven't shot with one though. I can say this however...you're gonna love having 2 bodies. I always carry the D2x/70-200VR and D3/300 2.8/1.7TC combos when I go "hunting" for birds and other wildlife. It's great being able to grab a combo and its ready to go.

Okay, so I went to check out the D90 last week.. camera phone photo:

I love it. I am buying it. I just don't want to buy it for another 1-3 weeks as I spent too much last week on new brakes for my Camaro I messed around with basically every feature I could for approx 1 hour. Ran my lenses while using the video mode and really enjoyed it.

Two questions, one camera related the other warranty-ish related.

(1): What are the issues people have been having with the D90? I was told there have been some negative aspects of it and I'd like to know. I heard they were relating to the video mode?

(2): The local camera shop offers a damage plan. Example: If I spend $900-$999.99 (which is where the camera falls), I can spend $153 extra for 1 year of complete damage protection. If I drop it and it smashes in half, if I run it over, drop it in mud, water, sand, dirt, catches on fire, etc. It's covered and will be repaired or replaced if it cannot be repaired. Good for a year. OR, I can pay $137/year for 2-5 years of the same protection. Is that worth purchasing? I DO bring my cameras into off-roading situations that involve hiking, rocks, mud, dirt, snow, rain, ice, sand, and so much more. I got it with my SB600. I dropped it in the studio and the inside broke and the flash stopped working. I immediately received a replacement until mine was fixed. It was great......

paying for that service for 5yrs=roughly $700 which is just shy of the new price of that camera which i would guess, in 5 years time will be worth about $600. so if you DONT break it, you're paying for a new body over those 5 years. just be careful or get the 1yr protection

with the issues with video mode, ive heard people have problems with getting the exposure down and it jumps around from being bright and dark. im seeing more and more write ups about getting the exposure lock down. the manual doesnt really explain how to use d movie. thats all i heard problem-wise.

The other issue with video is the rolling shutter which people call the "jelly effect." Basically, when panning quickly/moving the camera quickly in any direction, vertical lines "squish" in the opposite direction. You can see an example here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y484jV_2IfA

Still a great camera, and the video will be fine if you're aware of its limitations. Enjoy.
