Gash in tire. Not leaking. "Safe" for a week?
I guess I hit a bad pothole on the way home because this is what I saw when I went to jack up my car a few minutes ago: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It is not leaking from what I can tell (did the soapy water test, and have been checking the pressure as it cools off and such). Just for the heck of it, I took some bike tube glue (dont laugh, I dunno) and smushed it in there just incase there was a small leak that I couldn't detect. The deepest part of the gash doesn't show any belt (if there is even sidewall belt?)... It's just kinda gashed...lol As I said, the tire pressure is holding very steady and has been since I got home (over an hour now, and for the most part it is in the shade so it has cooled down from driving considerably). Do you guys think I'll be ok until next Monday? The reason I ask is because I will be getting new rims and tires this weekend and I will hopefully have them on Monday afternoon. I drive 4 miles each way to work every day and the farthest from home I go is 15 miles or so for one of the meets I frequent. Plus I won't do any aggressive driving to cause tire roll with the situation at hand. I just don't want to spend the $60-70 on a new tire now because the tire on the rim is practically new as it is, and plus, I would rather use that money to buy new tire(s) for the rims I'll be getting. Anyway. No real question. Just wanted to see what you guys thought.

can you just not drive the car until you get the new wheels/tires? or as little as possible on local roads? i dont want to tell you to drive the car in an unsafe condition, but just wondering about your options... even put the spare on just for now?

well thing about that is....
I dont have a spare lol... didn't come with one. Haven't had the push to buy one. and yes I COULD drive my car until I get the new shoes, but it wouldn't be financially fit compared to just getting another tire because my truck fails at mpg. On that same token, I would like to have the stock rims have good tires on them just incase, and also for winter or if I want to get the rotas powdercoated someday anyway.

I've got winter tires on the car as I type. The old tires hold air but just shouldn't be on the road because it will only take a small piece of glass to shred threw the tire.

x2. DO NOT drive on that tire. even tho its not leaking, its in a terrible spot. is that the metal wire mesh showing thru??? if so, that tire could blow at any minute under the right conditions.
U don't remember hitting a pothole? that is a real bad gash. imo you ran over a piece of sharp metal. |

don't drive on it, but for a cheap alternative for the week, go to a tire store, usually they have a back room full of replacement tires that they'll let go for free or maybe $5, and some can be really good if you get lucky, try that

Does Justin have a spare wheel?
All my MSP wheels are gone, but that was my bolt pattern...

i got it taken care of. thanks for the replies guys. when they took the tire off at the place I jabbed my finger into the gash (LOLOLOLOL) and ended up puncturing the sidewall haha. If I could do it with my finger, it would have only been a matter of time.

Yes, but there is no wire mesh or anything in the sidewall, that's why any puncture in the sidewall means a new tire.
