MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- A car plowed into a weekend bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others, police said.

The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race, said police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez.

A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision.

Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing Alejandro Alvarez, 37, of Monterrey.

Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer (21 mile) race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

Campos said he is an American citizen living in Brownsville. The U.S. Consulate could not immediately confirm that.

"We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved," consulate spokesman Todd Huizinga said.

I know I shouldn't laugh because someone died...but LMFAO!!!!!!! I laughed soooo hard when I saw that 1st picture. It's just sooooo ridiculous that even happened.

lol wow that sucks. in the last pic in the OP, the guy sitting onthe grounded closest to the camera, is that the remains of his helmet on his head? lol, you know whats worst then laughing, im trying to identify all the things that are flying out of the collision. i found a helmet, bike, show, water bottle, and last but not least, humans.

what else can you find?

Anyone who lives around the Velodrome can testify to the bikers who will ride at 12mph 5 deep in the middle of the roads totally ignoring the line of 6 cars. Ill have to print that picture out and stick it to my visor for those afternoons spent following the 30 bikes riding tandem trying to rush to work. lol

lol we get that around here too.96stang may be able to vouch for me, although they dont ride in huge packs and if they do, its normally a pretty nice line on the shoulder.

some guy actually ran into a bigger group of world olympic riders in training, he did it cuz he was pissed off. this was maybe a month ago.

my question is how someone got a picture of it, and why is there a cop already there when they got crushed?

looks like the cop was driving in front of the bikers then when the car was on the wrong side of the road and about to hit the cop the cop turned to avoid it and tada
