Been scared of Linux? Give Ubuntu 8.04 a try!

I have been a big Linux fan for some time now, and recently I started using Ubuntu because it was just so easy and required no thinking for the most part.

If you don't know what Ubuntu is, here is the quick and dirty description. It is a free linux based operating system which is just as powerful as Windows/OSX but totally free. It comes with a photoshop equivalent, an office package, and a ton of other free software already installed.

You can even try it without installing it. Simply download the install file/cd (700mb ISO) and burn it to a disc. Reset your computer with the disc in, and click boot from live CD. This is very handy for working on Windows PCs that have decided not to boot anymore. You can burn all of the files to a DVD or transfer them, and reformat and not lose anything.

It is completely customizable and can be made to look however you want it to. I currently am running a very clean theme that is so easy to use.

It will also make almost any computer usable again if Windows has decided that the computer is too slow. By that I mean, if you are sick of waiting 10 minutes to boot up, and then another 3 minutes to open Firefox just to get on the web...Try Ubuntu 8.04, it will drastically increase the speed of your computer, and you will never look back.

The software is easy to use, and you do not need to know any code at all to use it. Here is a quick screen shot of mine to show how nice it looks, and a quick video showing the power of some software on it such as Compiz which will make a pompous mac prick ashamed that they paid so much for their "cool, Mac-only" features.

My desktop:

Move the mouse to the top right corner to show all open windows:

3D Desktop (have 2+ separate desktops...useful for web development)

Ubuntu dual boot is sweet. I run BackTrack myself. It's a version of Slax.

Your going to need a whole new set of software, but this time 90% of the good stuff is free.

How would I go about viewing photos that say I have saved on a thumb drive?

Or word documents, does that all have to get switched/converted?

It comes with software to read all of those types! Just try the live CD. It lets you use the OS without installing it to see if you like it.

Justin - The bar at the bottom is an extension called AWN(Avant Window Navigator). To get it, go to System>Preferences>Synaptic Package Manager and search for "Avant". Once it loads, right click on "Avant-Window-Navigator" and click "Mark for Installation" and click yes to a couple of menus. It will then appear under system>Preferences as AWN Manager. If it works right for you, and you want it to load every time you start it, just go to System>Preferences>Sessions click "Add" an put this as the command "avant-window-navigator".

The WUBI installer is now part of Ubuntu 8.04. You should be able to download and burn the CD from their site and then put it into your drive and load it within Windows also!

wubi is included in the latest ubuntu. Just put the cd in the drive and it will let you install it inside of windows. The HUGE benefit is that you dont have to partition your hard drive, so if you decide you want to uninstall ubuntu, you just do it right inside of widows and your system is not affected at all.

I've been using ubuntu for about a year now. Its great. You can learn a lot from it and there are no viruses/spyware/etc.. to worry about.

Compared to windows, its crazy secure, and not even a target. Most hackers use linux, and spend their time helping to make it better, while wiring viruses to make windows worse.
