New WRX Owner! Low compression!

Hey guys I just bought an 04 WRX. On the way home from purchasing it the check engine light came on. I scanned the codes and it is showing a cyl 1 & 3 misfire. After a compression test, cyl 1 & 3 show 90psi and 2 & 4 are showing 135. The car seems to run fine though. Any ideas? I took the car back to the dealer and they are looking at it. I'm hoping to just ease my mind a little.

Low compression could be a few things...but eitherway...you got it from a dealer, so its their dime to fix it. Period.

The subaru? are both low cylinders on the same bank, if so I say headgasket due to the misfire code. Do a wet compression test with a squirt of oil, if it raises your reading its the rings. The later might not be easy on a Sub, IDK?

edit: also watch your oil/coolant levels very closely!

redline is right.. number 1-3 are on the same side.. If they are BOTH showing low compression I HIGHLY doubt anything is wrong other than a headgasket.

A leakdown test will tell ya

if it was the head gasket wouldn't I be experiencing things such as rough idle or white smoke? I mean the car appears to drive perfect. Could the timing being off cause such a thing?

90psi is enough to run, now smoke, I believe it might be a small leak and is being vaporized during combustion. The fact is you are getting a low reading on 2 adjacent cylinders on the same bank. That tells me and alot of mechanics its a headgasket or even worse a hairline in the block.

Yea I just picked it up Thursday. They are taking care of it. I should be getting a call back any minute with the diagnosis. They are giving me a hard time about a rental though. If they keep it for another day and refuse to give me a rental I'm going to tell them to keep the damn thing.

Looks like I lucked out with the fact that the tech didn't know what he was doing. Turns out it was just the maf so they say. No problem with the compression

whatt? i'd take it somewhere else for a second opinion before its not their responsibility any longer... i cant think of how they'd get normal compression in 2 and low in 2 and thats not something you want to roll the dice on...

Yea I agree. I bought it from Scott Lot here in and the Chrysler techs looked at it. Then they took it over to Becker Subaru for further diagnosis but I'm still going to get a second opinion.

dude. BRING IT TO ME. I wont charge you a dime to do a PROPER compression and leak down check.

Consider it a freebie for getting jerked around by the dealers.

Now I found something even better. There is a chunk of paint missing about the size of a dime on the rear quarter! That def wasn't there before I dropped it off!
