which linux distro?

I've decided that when I build my computer I'm going to go with a linux OS. Just not sure which one.

I've fooled around with Red Hat and Ubuntu (and the other *buntus)

The most important thing I need with the linux OS is the ability to run servers and still use the computer as a desktop. I'll be running apache w/ php and tomcat, the other obvious item will be MySQL...

I also intend on doing the usual computer stuff, watching videos, listening to music, burning dvd's, browsing the web, etc.

I need a fairly user friendly OS as I don't want to deal too much with setting it up. I'm alright with following how-to's and **** like that, but I'm not a "power linux user".

I just want to cut down on costs, free OS, free software.

The only difference you will see is the desktop parts, start there. The rest (apache, mySQL, whatever other server) will run just about identically. If any of them would run the server stuff better, it would most likely be Fedora. the difference should be minimal though.

Of course I sometimes run Apache & mySql on my XP box at home for development and staging of my personal web site.

Ubuntu all the way.

If you Dl the server install disk you get a nice LAMP stack right out of the box, then you can just install a gui with apt-get. I think apt-get install ubuntu-desktop will give you the whole shebang.

Not sure if the server version gives you any special hardened kernels or anything, but if you set up iptables right, you'll be pretty secure.

Don't be afraid of the command line. Tab complete makes it easy as pie.

Nothing scary about the command line, but you can't expect a newbie to figure out what sudo apt-get is on his own.

Old topic, but I run Sabayon with KDE 4.2. I suggest running something through Sun's VirtualBox before you clean install a distro. Either VirtualBox or VMware.

I have been a diehard slackware user for about 8 years... about a year ago I got a job as a linux admin supporting ubuntu.

As a new user I would recommend ubuntu 100%

i know this is old, but is there anything new out there with linux (free) like a newer ubuntu or something?

or should I just get that. I've been thinking of switching back as I dont use my computer for gaming too often(a lot of old hardware ), but i would like to...(torchlight on steam)

Ubuntu is a good distro. It is popular so there is a lot of info and support for it.

CentOS has a very good community and package repository. That would be my choice.
