Stolen Car Safety

I just want to try to educate everyone on preventing your cars from being stolen. It seems like half of the threads I read are about stolen cars. Well I just wanted to start a thread on prevention. There are obvious ways like "The Club" on the steering wheel.

The downside of this is that it can be seen and whoever is stealing your car can prepare by bringing a saw to saw your steering wheel. I was thinking along the lines of installing cut off switches. Whether its your fuel lines or your battery, something that is not in plain view. Just an idea for those of you out there that care about your cars and don't want to take the chance of it being stolen. But for those of you that like to watch someone write down your VIN and wait for the insurance money feel free to ignore this thread.

Feel free to add any other ideas.

The down side to the cut of switch is, if the person who is stealing your car is really desprate, they can just get a tow truck flat bed kind or the tow behind kind, and just steal your car that way. They then can proced to call the company and have a new key made simply with the vin # on hand.

Edit for some links that might atcually work, and the smartest way to help prevent your car is actually stolen:

Regardless of your security measure, if someone wants to steal your car, they will. Nothing can stop a flat bed from dragging your car. Stuff like Alphalocks, The Club, that stupid clutch device, are all just little things to get in a theives way.

If I were to have a car that would get looked at into being stolen, I would have a detachabe steering wheel with some sort of lock on it and a kill switch.

One of my friends actually has a wireless camera in his car as well, That is battery operated and turns on when there is motion.

I'm highly interested in installing cut off switches and the like in my truck. It has a starter cut off but its in plain ****ing view...

I'd like to install one for the fuel and the starter.

At least the truck is loud enough that if someone were to start it I'd hear it a mile away

Kill switch and fuel pump relays are a good start, you aren't starting your car without them. Even the Crankshaft Position Sensor will kill fuel and spark if you can get to it. yet it is obvious you disconnected something. If I let my car sit i do many things to it before I return from vacation/deployment/etc. A well hidden ignition AND fuel cut switch is a good measure but as stated prior it won't prevent the old flatbed.

Well investing in decent car alarms isnt a bad idea either.....

Cut off switches are good ideas, but to be effective they MUST be in a truely inconspicious place. Most people expect "tuner" cars to have cut off's so thiefs will find them.

An effective idea would be to have anchors proffesionally installed in your drive way that you can chain the car to from its tow points, axles, rear, crossmember etc.

i was never saying it was invincible, im saying its harder than an alphalock/the club. did it have a lock that required a key to open it? was the car driven off or was it taken on a flatbed?

The car was locked steering wheel taken off and it had an alarm on it. I'm assuming it was driven off because they found it the next day driving through jersey.

Security does one thing.

It keeps an unprepared theif from stealing your car.

That's about it. Kill switches, alarms, GPS tracking systems, wheel boots, clubs, etc etc etc. They all only do so much.

Heck, the even have taser clubs. Lol.

I have heard a few people talk about this. Do you have a link to what happened?

In modern cars, pulling fuses can achieve the same effect. Most cars have a hidden fuse box in the cabin with a fuse for the fuel pump. In most cases fuse boxes have empty slots from the factory, so unless the thief knows exactly what to look for their may just move on.

Theft prevention starts on the outside by not giving the thief a reason to break into your car or steal it.

most thieves steal cars they know their way around very well, and essentially pulling fuses will do nothng, they are prepared for that. There is NO way to be theft proof, only theft preventetive. Make your car not worth the time. In other words, do not just install one kill switch, install 5, on different circuits, multiple on the same circuit, etc. Make your car a royal pain in the ass to steal. Alarms, club+clutch club, boots, etc, etc. For parking at home the absolute best way to prevent a car from being stolen is to park it in. If you have a 1 car wide driveway, park your daily or beater behind your toy, and this time put the boot on the daily. Thieves will not want to go through the hassel of stealing a 92 escort, just to steal a 92 civic.

If you want to get really logical this post sums it up:

Now my question is, are we talking about all different years? Or just cars older then say... 2004? I have heard newer cars are harder to steal. (Not any specific MY, just saying that as a base to start off with)

harder to steal still does not equal theft-proof.

i understand. Again, the flatbed. There is not protection against it except parking the car in. You can help make it more noticeable by parking with drive-wheels against the curb in gear. This will cause tons of tire squeel as they drag it up resulting in more peoples attention. However, rarely will people do anything about it.

You're going to have to have one awesome car for someone to go through the trouble of getting a flat bed to steal it... mostly it's just protecting yourself from all the dumbasses that want a quick thrill or quick parts to get to.
