Importing photos to the computer
My card reader is averaging an hour and a half to import 4 gigs to my computer. Is this normal? Is there a more efficient method / hardware?

My SanDisk UltraII flip back and have a USB piece. I always just plug it into 1 of the USB plugs on the front of my case. Its slower leaving it in the camera and using the supplied cable, and its also a lil slow using the built in card reader ports on the front of the computer.
Mine are only 1.0g tho. Movies do take a few mins depending on size. Last edited by yellow2000S/R; 04-15-2008 at 12:23 PM. |

Not at all normal, as you can probably tell from the responses. For some stupid reason I haven't bought a card reader. It takes maybe 3 minutes per gig using a USB into my D300. The D70 is considerably slower but nothing like you're saying.

Wow, so I took a close look at the inside portion of my card reader. There is a nice big burn "fry" mark on the board.
Just ordered a new one.

spock, the other major limiting factor are the cards you're using, which are piss poor (truth not insult).
the ultra II, extreme III, extreme IV and so on all have higher read/write speeds... the write speed is how fast your camera can write to the card, but the camera also has a built in buffer to assist in this so its generally not that critical to have a fast write speed. the read speed is how fast your computer/card reader can read the info off of the card, and if you're using old/crappy cards they will be much slower at this... maybe 2 mb/s compared to the newer 20 mb/s for example... and if thats the case then yes it could take 10x longer than it should to transfer your photos. other factors are the card reader itself, and whether you're using usb 1.1, usb 2.0, firewire, etc. they say the chain is only as strong as its weakest link...

I was quoting that hour and a half estimate on the Extreme III 4 gig. I'm good to go now Bryan.

i assume you mean you think you'll be good to go after the new card reader arrives? hopefully that does the trick but if not then the other big one is to check whether you're using a usb 1.1 or usb 2.0 port... the 2.0 is much much faster.
