I'm bored, and so are you if you're reading this....

So, here are a bunch of things to stare at.

Stare intently at the white dot in the middle of the red circle for 1-2 min.
You'll see what true cyan looks like.

Stare intently at the black dot in the middle, and watch the colored fluff disappear!

wow thats f'n weird. after you said the M&M one was easy i went back to try it... once it popped out at me it stayed there without any effort... crazy. it didnt go back to 2D until i looked away from the monitor and then back.

Try this then:

Do the M&M one, but leave another one on the screen. You should be able to go back and forth between them and see both.

Thats how I did it, but I started with the first one. I've never had a problem seeing those things before.

The way the 3D illusions work is based on the way our eyesight works. When we look around, we don't actually see in 3D, but instead two separate 2D images...one with each eye. Our brain then interpretes how far objects in our vision are from us by the relative placement of them in each image. In other words, each eye sees the same picture, but from a slightly different angle. Something that is closer to us will be shifted more between the two images than something further away. This is why humans and predators such as wolves/lions have such good depth perception...stereoscopic vision. This differs from other animals who have their eyes on the sides of their head, which gives them much better peripheral vision and perception of motion in their visual field.

Here are some more images based on the same illusion, but actually separated out rather than in one image. The basic idea here is the same, to cross your eyes so that the two images come together in the middle so your brain can calculate the relative depth of different parts of the image.

I definitely think they're harder to do than the other ones, plus the effect isn't as dramatic. There are also parallel view ones, where you have to look "through" the image as if you were looking at something in the distance. Same effect, but different approach and different image.
