Tranny rebuild?

Any ideas how much a tranny rebuild would be for a 90-91 Civic Si Trans? New synchros/throw out bearing etc. Is it worth it our just buy a used one?

a full rebuild is extremely expensive, you will also need to replace bearings and seals, a used tranny is a much cheaper way to go. Bearings alone for my B series were over $200, slider assemblies/syncro's are near $200 each. For a proper rebuild I would expect to pay $500 in parts alone.

yes, not only parts but time involved. When i looked at synchros from a honda dealers website 1-3-5 was like 189 and 2-4-R was just a little more. Plus all of the seals and other bearings. It was expensive, very expensive. My input shaft seal alone from honda was over $20. It will also take easily several hours, and with how much most shops charge for trans work... not worth it. If you look hard enough you can sometimes find good deals on freshly re-built but still used transmissions both here and on h-t.

not worth it for a single tranny maybe a b series one... and why do you think everything needs to be replaced, open it up and see whats wrong before you go crazy buying replacement parts that arent needed

A proper rebuild will require every gear to be inspected for wear and replaced if worn out. Your transmission may be in good shape and may need just new synchro's.

I have opened up 5 B-Series trannys now, more than half under the abuse of 600+whp and 180k miles and I have yet to see signs of a worn gear, only thing I have seen is syncro's chewed up, slider assemblies ground into the hubs and beat bearings and seals, exploded diff's (which could easily break a gear) etc. IMO gears are not really an issue its just everything else.

You can get full Gearspeed Syncro sets with a Carbon Coating on 3,4,5 for like <$250, I paid $170 or so for the Carbon 3,4,5 so it wasnt that bad.... what sucked was paying for a 3/4 Sleeve set and not using the included new OEM 3,4 syncro's because I had the Gearspeeds.

It never hurts to inspect them unless you like to do the job twice. I know Honda transmissions usually outlast the engine. Mine for instance has some play somewhere in the differential or another area, but it still functions without a problem. Only thing is that if you aren't smooth with the clutch it makes a dim tapping noise when you release the clutch.
