Can i tweak my camera?

Hey guys my girlfriend got me a camera last Christmas and since I really have enjoyed photography. She got me a Sony DSC-N1. It is a great camera and takes awesome pictures I think for a small digital camera. I notice that it takes better pictures of buildings and close scenery better than people. I am going to the Caribbean in march and I didn't get enough of a loan refund check back(I’m still in school) to pick up an SLR and my buddy wont let me barrow his rebel (I wouldn't ether). Any way I don't know when I will be able to go back to a beautiful area like that any time soon so I want the pictures I take to really show all the great memories I will have. All the pictures were on auto, there is a manual mode but I don't really know what’s what. If any one could give me some pointer or tips I'd would be very much appreciated.

If there is a portrait mode available on it that might be your best option if they are up close and your sole focus is the person. I'm not familiar with the camera though so I can't offer that much help, sorry.

or you could rent a dslr. if you are sure you can figure out the settings and such i would do that. but yea most cameras have a portrait mode. did a quick search, i would guess it would be the soft snap setting.
