Functional Spoilers

Is there any real way to determine if a spoiler is functional? Im looking to buy a low profile non-ricey functional spoiler. Was hoping someone could hlep me out.

what type of functional spoiler? What are you going to be using the car for, a road race spoiler looks much different from a drag spoiler. Please don't say its for street use, if you are going fast enough to need a spoiler on the street you dont deserve traction ha.

slow down. I refuse to help anyone who openly admits to traveling at unsafely high speeds on public roads.

How fast are we talking here? I am not going to preach to you about how fast you go but any modern car should be able to do 80-90 without being out of control. Any faster than that, you probably want to re-think your foot pressure on the street. If it "swerve"s at 80-90, I would be looking at your suspension/alignment a little bit closer. Spoilers are typically only good at around 100+. (there may be some exceptions) Please rethink your driving habits though, you may kill the young lad that will grow up and cure cancer. KTB

65 (highway) and 80mph (turnpike/sometimes), and thats only on highway and turnpike and only when there is nobody around me, otherwise i stay at 5-10mph over, and im on those quite frequently. and they stopped making stock spoilers.

If your car is getting loose at those speeds in dry conditions it is not due to lack of down-force, i promise that. Look at tires, suspension, and alignment like cizin said.

Yea I would say you need to look other places. At those speeds, almost any spoiler is 99% cosmetic.

Agreed.

Any really spoiler or wing is not going to do much of anything at street speeds. Modern cars are designed to be stable at the kind of speeds we see, even on highways.

even without one of those locks ^ if you had this kind of "functional spoilers" they would be too large to steal anyway:

my edit: I removed sarcastic/humorus pics in line with the more serious side of this thread

Poor 200SX. I'm sure you can find a factory Prelude wing on an online forum or a junk yard. Perhaps even on the internet if you look hard enough.

ya know guys... i'm sure at one point in ur life you liked to race. And your a liar if you say you didn't. So lay off of him with the insults. You can simply just say that he might want to take it to the track instead of the street. Stop being such D bags.

As for the OP. You def have something else going on. Its not down force. If your car is too high and you really don't have suspension work done to your car then your car is going to be unstable at high speeds. invest in a good suspension and some sway bars and you won't have that problem.

etc.etc...a spoiler wont do a whole lot for ya, just give you lots of drag and less MPG

He's asking about increasing rear downforce to maintain high speed stability and you're giving him an auto cross suspension set up?

To OP: The only true way to see the functionality of a rear spoiler is to have it wind tunnel tested at various speeds on your car.

But if you want it to stop without one, then start driving slower.

I think Carm stated the speeds he is talking about. There isn't too many of us that havn't done those speeds and still do from time to time. I think every aspect of this question has been answered so lets leave this be before another thread is locked due to stupidity and e-thuggn'.
