WTF Smell??? (Pic Included)

So, the last 2 days or so, I've noticed this odd smell coming from my car. The first time I smelled it was when I was driving. I didn't think much of it, thought maybe it was the exhaust from the car in front.

But then I smelled it again, when on the road by myself. Then once again, when I parked my car and got out.

So now I'm like wtf. So I checked my oil, even though it doesn't smell like an oil burn. Seems fine.

I thought maybe my clutch was going. But then after thinking about it, that can't be it, because it starts to smell once the car gets warm, like if I turn it on in the morning and let it warm up for like 10-15 minutes, it will start.

So today, I briefly check over things under the hood again, then I drop down on the ground take a look under the car and see this on my x-pipe.

WTF is that? I wonder if that is causing the smell, once the exhaust gets hot enough?

I'm at work so I really don't have the time to get into it, but I did touch it and it feels super gooey/rubbery but oddly hard too, and definitely not rubbing off easy.

Sorry but it's a camera phone pic.

Haha Jon. No really though, I've barely driven the car lately, been bumming around in my Jeep, and I sure as hell can't remember hitting anything, or even driving through anything that would do that.

I stuck my face as close as I could to it, and still can't figure out WTF it is lmao. I just want to know if it's causing the smell, or if I have some other engine issue going on. Hopefully it's this stupid **** and not a leak.

try using some wd40 or something to get it off of there... or carb cleaner... if that doesnt work you might have to take the pipe off and scrape that **** off

Yeah that's what I was thinking, when I can get the time. Thing is, it doesn't smell like a dead animal smell. Smells more like...I dunno, a burnt styrofoam smell, or something to that effect.

You probably sucked a plastic bag/foam cup under your car from the side of the road and now it is burnt to your exhaust. That sucks.

exactly. plastic bag. just crawl under there with a razor blade and go at it. If you want to make it a littler easier, let the car get warm, and wear gloves so you dont burn yourself.

plastic bag. happens all the time. best way to get it off is a die grinder with a sanding disc. short of that use a piece of sand paper and go to town.

Aha stupid bag. That's probably what it is too. Which would also explain the nasty plastic like smell. Guess once I get it off, I'll know for sure. Fun. And it's COLD outside.

And I don't have a grinder so looks like I might have to use sand paper, or let it warm up and use gloves and scrape at it.
