Official Lighting Thread

What's everyone use?

All I have right now is an LED brick for video.

I'm getting a flash for x-mas and soon after purchasing a lighting kit to use for video / photo.

I'm going to be collaborating with someone to make a ring LED light.

If there's enough interest we should have a meet or two to experiment with lighting.

Honestly I've never used it for that purpose...yet. It's a guitar mic that you lay right over the front of the amp. I can imagine it would be able to stand up to intense sounds under the hood.

Well if your interested..

Over winter break, I think an RB with an external WG dump would be a nice tester for it.

I'm a Canon guy so most of my stuff won't work with your gear since the majority of TST members are using Nikon

Canon 580EX
Canon 430EX
Canon 420EX
Alien Bee B800
Jacobs Black Box battery pack
Jacobs Tuxedo battery pack

420EX to left, 430EX to right, 580EX on camera setup:

result:

I only use the B800s indoors since I don't have a portable power supply.

The 580 is the master and the 430 & 420 are slaves. I'll eventually go with a wireless trigger since it'll allow me to be more creative with where the light source is coming from, but it's not high on my list at the moment.

as an example of ambient light. you dont always have to use flashes, umbrellas, and other lighting equipment to get the shot

Saw this tutorial on how to make a cheap ring light flash. Some of the pictures taken with this look pretty good.

Does it happen to be a sennheiser e609 silver?
Guitar mics can withstand a lot.
Guitar amps can get a lot louder than car engines.

I didn't realize there was an older thread about this.

My kit came last week and I'm pretty happy... now I'll be buying another flash to go with it once I get comfortable using just one. I've had the ebay triggers out on two assignments and taken countless pictures in the house with them and they've been great. Haven't really tested the range, but so far I'm happy. Especially for the price.
Can't wait to experiment more once I get some more time.
