so i need a new lens...

since my kit lens commited suicide and refuses to focus anymore, im looking for a replacement. the first option is the nikor 18-70mm lens. always have loved it. the 2 others for that range would be the tamron 17-50mm 2.8 and the sigma 18-50mm 2.8. all 3 of those are sharp from pictures ive seen. the only other lens i would use as a direct replacement is the nikon 18-200mm vr.

the way i look at this, i want a lens that i will use a lot. since i moved down here to florida, i really dont need the 20-50mm range. i used my kit lens to go wide at 18 and everything else is with my 70-300mm for sufing and nature crap. which brings me to my other choice the sigma 10-20mm. i have used this lens and fell in love with it.

i just wanna hear some opinions in case im being rediculous again lol.

the main lense i use are
18-50mm for the wide end and portraits
50mm 1.8 prime for portraits and any type of impact shots
70-300mm for surfing, birds, girls in bikinis lol

If you're talking about the 18-70mm that I have, don't get that. I think if you use the wide end and that's what you're looking for, get the nikon 12-24mm. Hell, if you get the 12-24 and don't like it, I'll gladly trade you for my 18-70mm!

I love my 10-22mm it's becoming my most used lens, granted most of my photography lately has been interior architectural stuff.

I have been considering the Tokina 12-24mm and the Sigma 10-20 for my D80. although i like the build quality of the Tokina I think i leaning towards the Sigma, I want less overlap and more wide angle!

the Nikon is supposed to be the best option for Nikon specific lenses in this category but its also almost double the price and isn't noticeably better.

I say go with the 10-20!

A good comparison of Wide angle Zooms

Aside form the 10-20, the 18-200 VR is a great lens but if you don't have the money for that and want to replace your 18-50 you could always upgrade to a 18-55VR

jspek - I just picked up the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, and I love it so far.

Check it out: Click here.

Go super-wide and get the Sigma 10-20 or Tokina 12-24. The Tokina isn't as wide but it maintains an aperature of f/4 throughout the focal range.

It's the extent of my modifications to the Supra. It's the first Supra that hovers...no need for new tires all the time, or aftermarket suspension. It's wonderful. LOL
