Cancer.

So, my brother-in-law, Bill has been battling/recovering from cancer in his stomach and esophagus. The doctors found it one year ago, and blasted him chemo and radiation. They found that the cancer was gone, but had to remove his stomach anyway. Then back to a few months of chemo, which brings us up to now...

The doctors opened him up today to check a blockage in his intestine, just to find more cancer. They basically closed him up and gave him 6 months at best. 40 years old.

I just so f#$king unfair.

So, I am in desparate need of ideas. If by some miracle he is functional enough to go out and have a good time, where should I take him. I'm thinking of car museums and things like that. I'm not sure if he will be capable of anything at all, the pain will probably keep him in bed. But there is always hope.

That actually sounds like a decent idea, but its up to him if he wants to go through with it or not.

Yeh, it has been a rough year to say the least. Hopefully, I can get downtown tomorrow to see him. All we can hope for is a serious miracle right about now.

i know all about family suffering from cancer, my grandfather died at the age of 51 from melanoma. He was one of the first five people to be treated w/ what they now use to cure it...but by the time they started that it was too late. He went through skin grafs, chemo...basically everything horrible that can happen before you die. Horrible. I'm sorry for your bad news.

i was gonna say the ring too, if hes into cars, that is something that someone should see before they die, plus u can see all the car museums out there.

if out of the country isnt possible, the 12 hours of sebring was definetly a cool experience, still not local though.

theres nothing local to see that i know of except liberty bell, independence hall etc.

maybe ask him what his dream was that hes never done before.

i know id be sick to my stomached worried everyday if i knew i had 6 months to live. i know id be doing everything if i knew that, the ring, hawaii, california, times square on new years, yosemite park, the list wouldnt stop, id sell my house if i was single and blow all the money if i was gaurenteed not to make it.

hopefully he beats it, i heard several stories about ppl saying they had 6 months to live and wound up on their 2nd year

Honestly, as much as you feel that he would like to do something cool, I have a feeling that he simply wants to be with the people he feels for. He won't care what the hell you do, its the simple fact that he is doing it with you. He probably wouldn't want you to go out of your way to do anything extravagant. He may appreciate something that you plan for him, but people in his situation a lot of times simply don't want a be a burden on everyone else. All you gotta do is spend some time with him and make sure he knows that he isn't being a burden! Its that simple!

If I had to pick something to do, I would find a nice quiet place to go where you can simply talk and and remember the best times! Whether that would be at a car museum, a restaurant, or even just some place you used to go before.

Best of luck Mike, and best wishes for your friend.

Mike,

I am a cancer survivor, and I know what he is going through. God bless him, and I hope he defies the doctors predictions.

i remember 11 years ago on my birthday my older brother was diagnosed with lynphoma (sp). that was a pretty ****ed up time. i honestly would just want to spoil the **** outta myself and my family, if it were me. i would just buy everything i ever wanted on credit, anything my loved ones needed. but as far as knowing what to do for someone else, thats a tough one.

Thanks for the support and ideas. This whole situation sucks. Cancer is a nasty problem. When I started looking into alternative cures, I was suprised to find that insurance companies don't pay for them. Interesting and very frustrating.
