Starting to a mod an 07 wrx, need suggestions

A friend is ready to throw some money at his 07 wrx. I guess he wants to start with exhaust and tune. Which downpipe's, up-pipes would you guys recommend?

invidia catless dp, also its not a bad idea to get an exhaust manifold/upipe package. check out www.jscspeed.com. as for a tune, get an accessport or ecutek, and go get a tune. it should make some good power.

uppipes and exhausts can go from any price range. It all depends on how much he wants to spend but this is a good place to start. As far as an AP or Ecutek I'd say save the money and see Ray and get a nice OpenSource tune for a hell of a lot cheaper.

true, but if he can afford an 07 wrx im sure he can afford an ap (or other) and get his platform off to a strong start. if he wants to get into heavier modification in the future, he'll need a good form of engine management

Yeah, but Jeffro is right... hes better off using the money saved by going open source and using that on some suspension goodies.... springs & sways for example. If i had it to do over again...i would have never gotten an AP. Their off the shelf tunes are crap.

Quoted for the truth!

HKS downpipe. $175 and your choice of cat back. If you dont mind buying used you can pickup turbo backs for dirt cheap on nasioc.

Oh you mean my 2.5block with 2.0 heads, sti cams, vf34, pinks and a walboro is to much for open source?

I don't think so. Spend the money on something else.

Maybe I should clear something up about OpenECU. OpenECU can do "nearly" everything that the AP can do. The only differences are launch control and changing maps on the fly. And neither of these features are important. OpenECU has no license fee like EcuTek, so you only pay a tuner to actually tune your car, you do not pay for the software or any additional hardware. Then when you change your mods, you go get another re-flash. It will save you a lot of money!

He's definetly going to do the openecu stuff probably via Ray at turbotek. I dont know how far he's planning to take it but for now the Cobb is not going to happen. So far he's looking to do the down and up pipes and also a cutout so he doesent have to do full exhaust right away. So I'm basically just looking at suggestions for those since I know jack **** about anything Subaru.

i have an aps catless downpipe for sale, and a catback or two as well, just not sure which i'm going to keep and which i'm going to sell yet, haha. if he's looking to keep things simple just a turboback and a tune will make a very nice improvement over stock, or if he wants to go further he could look to do fuel pump, injectors, turbo, and upgraded intercooler.

Word. VF34 packages (turbo, pump, injectors) are fairly cheap these days, atleast compared to other setups.

Scooby noob mistakes to avoid assuming he isn't planning a turbo upgrade in the near future:
1. A BOV.........nuff said
2. A FMIC (Though cool, with stock turbo its not worth the cost-to-hp ratio. Many believe it adds lag and hurts performance)
3. Aftermarket uppipe for 06-07 models (The stock uppipe is catless and doesn't restrict flow enough to justify replacement. 05 and below are a different story)
4. Cold Air Intake (Not needed and without a tune will more then likely result in loss of hp. The stock airbox is just fine, though a high-flow panel filter (K&N) doesn't hurt)
5. AWD launching after every red light. (It can be costly and Subaru dealers love the phase "Warranty denied for driver abuse!")
6. Using the handbrake to "drift" (Not sure if 06-07 are different but pulling the E-brake to slide around in snow will destroy your vicious coupling. Others correct me if this doesn't apply to 06-07 WRX, I know it does for the 02 model :P )
7. Vinyl HP stickers (Despite popular belief, stickers/decals from companies such as APS and Cobb do not add hp)

Can you do us all a favor and just post everything you have for sale in one thread or have a yard sale.

Every thread you post you say you "got a couple of _______ laying around"

Seriously, what do you have that will fit an 04 Forester XT?

I am running an Invidia DP and an HKS carbon ti catback and love the sound. For an uppiped I would be inclined to go with Invidia also, the quality is great. For a tune Utec Delta and Verocious FTMFW!! I've seen that combo many times and it's got me convinced.

well jeez you must have spent a lot of money to make 301 awhp it seems. beautiful car, and i love your set up. i actually don't know much about open source at all. all i'm saying is with a catless invidia turboback, intake, 255lph, utec, and a tune from andy i made 318 awhp. thats a big jump for the money spent, and he could definitely make good numbers with a 2.5 wrx and a similar setup

Haha...heres something that will make you as an sti owner cry... He can correct me if i'm wrong here, but I believe he made that 301hp on the STOCK 2.0 block with just the exhaust and vf34 with tune upgrade...which I believe was how he bought the car.... His current setup with the 2.5 shortblock is still in its finishing stages of having the bugs worked out.... So he actually didn't spend much money at all to make it to the 301 mark I don't believe..
