What The Hell Is This Noise??!??

Ok... I've had this noise that appears while holding constant medium throttle and the PSI's reach 5lbs. I had the noise even BEFORE my turbo swap, it just wasn't quite as loud as it is now, which makes me think its NOT an exhaust leak. Attached is a sound clip. It sounds like one of those high powered lawn sprinklers. Turn up your treble to hear it clearly and start listening at about the 5 second mark. I've tighted up things to spec a couple of times, but can't seem to figure out what it is. IS it an exhaust leak...or could it be something like the cat in my downpipe has become defective and the catalyst is flying around.

This was recorded with the windows up, using my Ipod laying in the floor, and trying to hold the boost at 5-6psi.

I hear it. How is the car running? Have you checked the egt, 02 sensor bungs?

Car is running fine. And you know, thats 2 things I haven't checked are the EGT and front 02 bungs. I'll add that to the list of things to look at. Anyone have any other ideas?

Andy even heard it when he tuned me and he wasn't sure what it was either. He said it wasn't revealing itself during the tune either. Its REALLY noticable sitting in the car. You'd think if it was an exhaust leak it would show up on logs or on the dyno or something. Thats what made me think its something else.

I'm 100% it's an up pipe leak! Mine did it about a year after I did my up-pipe and vf34. It was like a high pitched thing, really wierd. Anyways, check that because im pretty sure thats it.

D, where exactly on the uppipe was it leaking and what did you do to correct it? Just replace gaskets and reinstall?

I let it go for a little bit because it was right around the time I switched to the 18g. I would just uninstall it and re-install it with new gaskets and see if that works. It's when you are in boost only, correct?

Yep only in boost...always right after I hit 5psi. Noise starts tapering off at 7psi.

Ben, the APS is a flex... and you know, I didn't actually test the flex section for a leak... DAMNIT.
Heres a question... if its been leaking for a long time...shouldn't the area near the leak be sooty from the exhaust?

Yes, you should see some carbon build up. I would start looking for that.. its strange that you had the noise with two different turbos.
