Apartments...

Which would you feel safer in, an apartment in a highrise whose main renter base is the elderly, or an apartment located on the first floor of a 2 floor apartment building?

I've been giving this a lot of thought and originally wasn't happy with the idea of the highrise... but the more I think about it the more secure I feel with that as my home due to the height of the points of entrance.

I live in an apartment where I'm on the ground floor (half underground half exposed) of my building, and to be honest, I really wish I was higher up. I lock all my windows before I leave on a trip, even though anybody could just kick one in and get inside. I wish I was on a higher floor just for privacy.

Ground floor. You can make more noise with less complaints. An area with primarily elderly renters would only lead to all my neighbors above, below, and next to hating me.

I really don't make a whole lot of noise, so I'm not so concerned about the neighbors.

Right now I live in the same type of place as you Kiel. It drives me nuts... the windows slide left to right and the window lock is just plain old ****...

Ground floor for me, but thats because I have a dog and its so much easier to just open the door and let him out.

I lived in one like this in Philly for a year. The entrance to my apartment was right next to the entrance for the building. The door was always slamming shut and I could hear everything. It was scary sleeping knowing sombody could just kick in my windows very easily. In the city I'd go high rise, suburban I wouldn't mind either.

Ha, same thing, right down to the window style. I mean, the place itself doesn't feel unsafe, but god forbid I want to leave the windows cracked while I'm out - I'd have to block them up with wood or something so they don't slide too far.

I wouldn't want to live in an appartment in the city for one thing, just because of the fact that its in the city. I would rather live in an appartment in the suburbs, where its nicer.

I'd be in Norriton near KoP if I went with the high rise, which I think I will be. 5th floor will be nice... my buddy lives in the same building with his g/f and he says he doesn't know whether or not he has neighbors above or below him. The floors are pretty solid

The other advantage in a high rise is what are the chances someone is gonna pick your place out of all of them to break into.

that is another bonus that escaped my mind... I'm gonna fill out the application either friday or saturday. Perferably friday after work.

The free beer at work starts at 4:10, so I'm gonna bounce then to go see the place and do the paperwork.

I would do the high rise, I live on the top floor in my building, and i can go out on my patio and still have privacy. When i lived my in my other apartment that was half underground, I too was afraid to sleep with the window open on a cool summer night. And first floors you have no privacy(If you have a balcony) because everybody is coming and going and looking at you.

I used to live on a ground floor and after my landlord changed the locks on me with all my stuff still in the apartment I realized how unsafe it was (took me 1min to get in and get the rest of my stuff out) Now I live on a second floor and I definetly feel more secure...specially don't have to worry about people looking in through the windows.

that is the one thing I am really not looking forward to. My TV is heavy as balls. I can't lift it myself cause I'm weak... Not to mention I'm buying all new stuff from Ikea...

Luckily though, my one good friend lives in the same building

Living on the ground floor is nice, though, when the cute asian girls in their short skirts sit on the lawn directly facing your window and eat burgers. Not that I stared out the blinds or anything.
