Help me with IP Blacklisting (PeerGuardian2)

Well, 1 week after moving into my new house, our internet was disconnected for using Bittorrent.
So now I need to find a way to block Trackers from the companies who watch, for my own privacy and safety. I have found a program called Peerguardian2 which claims to do this for me. But i have some questions about it.

1) Does it really work? Do any of you use it?
2) How do I make it faster? My internet crawls when its on.

No, I actually use Bittorrent for a lot of stuff, and I would rather not have people watching everything I do. I am not saying how can I download lots of illegal stuff, I am simply asking how I can make my computer more secure to protect myself on the internet.

Seems like a legit reason.. totally understandable. Are you using a router?

Mind if I ask who your ISP is? I'm just curious who turned your service off

Yes. D&E Cable Internet -> Motorola SB5100 Modem -> Linksys Wireless Router.

I have all the proper ports forwarded to maximize performance already. I will be taking it easy on the downloads for a little while because I am sure my ISP is watching our activity.

Has anyone been using anything to protect their privacy online?

McAfee Security Suite is very good with blocking and monitoring which files change on your system and if bad/malicious scripts are kicked off.

You sure you were downloading too much or were you the victim of a denial of service attack? Anywho, what was the quota they gave you for how much you did download/how much you're allowed? Good luck

That's odd.. I haven't had any problems with my Verizon DSL with downloading.

If you're constantly downloading a lot (>100GB/month), your ISP will likely issue you a warning, and the second attempt will result in account termination. Smaller ISPs (like his) are more likely to track that kind of usage and have more monitoring capability because they cover a smaller area.

Mcafee, Norton, panda are all garbage.

There is no way for you to block your isp from monitoring how much bandwidth you use.

D&E is a terrible provider. We have to deal with them at my job due to some of our clients using them for their network connection and they have piss poor customer service and drag their feet on getting problems resolved.

I can't say I'm surprised they disconnected you. That said, did they say that they disconnected you for excessive downloads or because you were using BitTorrent specifically? Like Honest_Bob said, there is no way to make them unaware of the amount of BW you use, but they shouldn't be able to terminate your connection just for using Bit Torrent. It in itself is not illegal.

I wouldn't say they are all garbage, each have their own flaws. IMHO, Panda is WAY strict, Norton Corporate Edition is good but expensive and McAfee is middle of the road. It's true, there is no way to block your ISP from monitoring your bandwidth usage, I hope you didn't think I implied that

wireless routers pretty much slow your highspeed down to a crawl. My g/f's computer is connected to the router wirelessly while my computer is directly connected to the router for faster speeds b/c of the web work I do

i dont have any speed problems with my wireless, nor does my xbox?

I download at like 150-250 KBPS on this DSL, which is fantastic for DSL.

I think he means that LAN > WLAN which is true. Your connection wired (excluding 100+ feet of ethernet) is always going to be faster then wireless (on the same router).

Just read this too:

Yeah, not a denial of service attack. They presented us with a copy of a letter from the NBC Copyright Committee who tracked a download of The Black Donnelly's, and immediatly disconnected it without telling us.

I even had to call tech support 3 times while diagnosing this. And even the technician who came out was unaware that they had done it. Terrible company.

It is all back online now though. After a long battle over the phone.

Azureus has a plugin that will block connections to/from IPs that are associated with certain companies. It's not fool-proof, but it may help.
