your already driving a 4dr you should be looking to drop weight off that chassis instead of adding more truthfully.

all slapping aside, if you put a decent set of speakers and a speaker amp in the car, your going to want bass. a sub isnt just for rap music or to set off car alarms all music has bass obviously and when you get the highs in the car to where your happy with them your going to be missing the bass.

what you need.

a good radio/head unit with good pre outs look into eclipse radios. a decent set of speakers for the front (components ideally) and then really anything for the back speakers (there really just to fill the music out. as well s a multi channel amp for the interior speakers and a sub/sub amp in the trunk. if you dont want anything crazy as far as subs go, look into JLs 8w7. its possibly the most amazing subwoofer ive ever seen and can operate well off of as little as 250 watts. (optimally you would want 500 watts for it) its not a cheap sub but wouldnt you rather spend the money once and never have to again.

I put a set of front speakers in and I have a headunit because I needed a CD player. It's nice I guess, but full 3" exhaust is damn loud...

jl components, jl w3, jl amp and your set, that is all anyone needs, any more than that and the bass is just annoyed. Ask yourself do you want to kart around and extra 150 lbs and be annoyed w/ the bass, or do you want to kart around an extra 30 lbs and have a system that sounds good in and out of the car

In reality its all about the install. A little $150 10" in the right size sealed box with a little ass 300W amp will be plenty.

I'm running:
$275 Kenwood head unit
stock front and rear speakers
RF Punch 10"
Cadence Q3000 amp

Setup correctly it sounds pretty damn good to me. Its nothing compared to my old 1800W setup, but still sounds better than 70% of what other people are bumping and they probably have twice as much equipment.

Thats not entirely true. Every system I have ever put in a car has been well balanced. I hate bass that trembles the neighborhood, I like it when the music sounds rich and full. My current setup in the M3 is 2 JL 10w7s, I have diamond audio d6's all around on the inside, and jl 1000.1 and jl 400.4 amp. Its great, very balanced, very crisp.
