Next best tranny?

My tranny went out two weeks ago..

Whats the next best thing? RA gear set, STi tranny, ect. ? and has anyone here done an STi swap on their WRX? how do you like it.. something ill probably not like if i get an STi tranny would have to be the short gears...

im sure the only reason why i beat a stg 2 STi was cause of the gearing..

i have a STi 6MT... i really like it to be honest, although i realize that its not as fast as a 5 speed in a straight line. if you can find a 2007 STi 6MT the gearing was revised to be a bit longer in 2, 3, and 4, and most including myself prefer it.
the best option really for someone who drag races or even in general is a 5MT PPG gearset... 1-2 straight cut and 3-4 helical... thats going to be strong as hell, not as heavy as the 6MT and good gearing for drag racing. the one thing it gives up is that unless you spend even more money on a quality front diff, you're still stuck with the inferior stock WRX front which isnt too bad for drag racing but it leaves a lot to be desired with auto-x or road courses.
PPG gears are $3500 but you'll also need a donor case with front and center diffs, 5th gear, reverse, output shaft, and you'll need to purchase synchros and bearings as well as have it assembled professionally. It does come out to be more than a 6MT in the end, depending how cheap you can find a 6MT for at least.

I have an 06 STi 6MT that's going to be available in about a week... $3600 for tranny, mount, driveshaft, clutch, flywheel, shift linkage, and shift knob. but shipping to you would be a mofo so I'm not sure if thats even a good route to take.

edit: forgot to add that the RA transmission never impressed me. if i'm going to spend the money, i want something i can be sure of to not break again.

I would reccomend the STi Tranny also. I know people say that Straight Cut Gears are superior to Helical for strength and longevity, but I have yet to find any solid proof.

I have PPG helical 1st and 2nd and ver6 sti 3rd and 4th. This was the best bang for buck for me. Unfortunately the price on my setup went up about $700 after I bought mine. so your best bet now is STI RA, sti 6spd or full PPG.
If you do decide to go PPG, you can save yourself some cash by getting them from Rallispec instead of Andrewtech.
The helical PPG whines too, but no where near as loud as the straight cut. It's actually music to my ears! The straight cut you have to shift fast and hard all the time to avoid wear. The helical cut you can shift normal.

I do think that the RA gears are strong enough for most people and you can get them for around 1600, but i like to drag race. Thats why I got the PPG instead.
