depends on air temp since thats in the equation..

v= speed
T= temp (cel)

v solids > v liquids > v gases

v = 331 m/s + (0.6 m/s/C)*T

v = 331 m/s + (0.6 m/s/C)*T

v = 331 m/s + (0.6 m/s/C)*20 C

v = 331 m/s + 12 m/s

v = 343 m/s

343 m/s is approximately equal to 750 miles/hour

Ya, but a commercial jet flies at like 15,000 meters, where the temperature is more like -50C, meaning the speed the Concorde did when booming is closer to 650.

The actual equation is also much more intense than what you have got there. It takes into account the density of the air and the pressure of the air, both things greatly affected by height.

My dad was a pilot in the AF for 20 years, he did it more times than he cared to count, and he had to know all the math surrounding it as well. He never really liked it tho.

You can get corrective surgery and a waiver for that can't you, as long as your depth perception is kosher?

I tried to join the AF to be a pilot but was told I didn't have the correct degree since I didn't do ROTC in college. SO, I am attempting to get into a few schools for Aeronautical Science/Engineering and then apply to the ANG when I get out. Hopefully I'll know soon if I got into my top choice.

I love this one...

IIRC, you have to be top of your class to get the waiver, cause even surgery can fail...

im not sure if they break the sound barrier over land, usually water. maybe if your higher up it dont matter. also if u break the sound barrier and keep the speed up would it still shatter glass and stuff.

did any1 listen to preston and steve about the blue angels thing, reminded me when i was at wildwood and i seen a jet go by when i was on the beach, i seen it and a few seconds later i heard it.

If you can get a waiver, it has to be hard as hell. It costs millions to train and prepare every pilot, why would they pick me with even corrected vision, when there are ten guys like me with better vision naturally.

1500 on my SAT's, 790 on the math, my father is a retired officer, I had colonels and a retired general at my graduation party. With all this, it still couldn't have happened, there are too many others out there for them to spend a million on me and my "corrected" vision.

It doesnt break the planes windows, it breaks the windows of houses and cars if they are too close. It usually only happens out in the desert or over the sea.

Thats b/c light travels faster than sound, so you see the jet before the sound reaches you. Living next to an airport I see planes go over all the time, the sound is always a second or so delayed b/c the planes are so far away the sound is noticeably behind the light.
