Questions about a 1g dsm

1. Is it possible to convert a gst to AWD? If so, how much work does it involve?

2. Is certain years better than other?

3. If the motor has a rod knock is it more cost effective to rebuild it, or buy a new motor?

4. How much is a 1g with a rod knock worth? It also needs paint. The interior seems pretty good for its age. 105K on the clock.

When you were young, like 10 years old (probably not that long ago), didn't anyone ever tell you "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all"?

Thanks for trying to help, but it didn't. If you have anthing else valuable to say, please do. If you don't, please stay out of my thread.

That depends on how much more performance for the dollar I will get at a certain point. I was planning on a couple grand for now.

i dont know that an awd conversion would really be worth while,to be honest im not entirely sure that it can be done...i mean we know it "can" be done but at what cost..... itd prob be more cost effective to find a gsx shell to play with instead of the gst....unless the gst is a hell of deal that your not willing to disclose.... for understandable reasons, i did find this for you though http://www.dsm.org/archives/1996/03/19960321.txt/4.html ....also, road race engineering has supposedly done this at a cost of about 6000, whether that is a kit cost or what that cost includes i dont know....but a decent-nice 1g gsx can be had for that much

1. not worth it

2. i think the 90 is the slacker of the 91-94

but the weird thing is, if someone could answer this ide like to know, 1gs are like 197hp@like 14psi. 2gs are like 210hp@10psi? yet the 6bolts better. now if every psi is like 10 hp. if you put a 2g to 14 you'll be at 250hp to the crank. im so confused. sorry for that rant.

but im pretty sure that 1gs had like a 5hp difference. like 90's were 190hp and 91-94 195hp

3. not exactly sure but from what i know. rebuild would be the better way because then you could jump right into the forged pistons, eagle rods, ect. even if its more.

4. not tooo much. ive seen them running good for like 1500
is this the 90-91 style or 92-94?

ps- dont quote me on anything. im not 100%

A fwd with A rod knock =500 I paid 800 for A awd with A good body and paint but it had a blown motor .I would look for awd that has A rebuildable motor, that will save you money. I had to buy A 800$ motor then rebuild it because the one in the car had A hole in the block.
1g's have lower compression pistons compared to 2g's

1 - 1G, yes, but it is very much not worth it. The floors between the GST and GSX are completely different and need to be swapped (read, A LOT of work). On a 2G, it is nearly a bolt in afair, I know this because I've done it.

2 - That is debateable. The best year, arguably, is a mid 92 production, because it will still have a 6 bolt motor as well as a 4-bolt rear. The late 92-94 have 7 bolt motors with 4 bolt rears, and the 90-early 92 have 6 bolt motors with 3-bolt rears. The 6-bolt motors have stronger rods than the 7 bolt motors, but they have weaker mains since the 7-bolts are fully girdled. Crankwalk was an issue for 2G 7 bolts, but not 1G 7-bolts. I wouldn't be afraid of a 1G 7-bolt car. A 90 model year has a stronger 3-4 gear than all other years, it has straight cut gears in the oil pump which are supposedly better, it has a factory external oil cooler like the evos, its wiring harness is completely different than all other years, the coil pack is different than all other years. There are many things that set the 90 apart... bumpers too.

3 - Rebuilding a DSM motor with stock parts is a waste IMO. Aftermarket pistons and rods are relatively cheap and far superior to the stock stuff. Build a good foundation now and you'll be happier later. If you want to keep a stock motor, pick up a good used one. Be careful when rebuilding motors, avoid cutting the cranks at all costs, since there is a nitrided hard coating on the journal surfaces from the factory. If you cut the crank 0.010" you'll severely compromise that. It'll work fine at stock power levels up to 300-400WHP, but that crank won't last in a high HP race application.

4 - 1G GSTs simply aren't worth much, at all, unfortunately. Good running cars can be had for 1500-2000, a rod knock car with bad paint? 500 maybe, but I wouldn't even pay that much.

1. I've seen it done on 2g's before. Fairly good amount of work, you need a awd trans/transfer case, driveshaft, rear end...imo it's cheaper to just buy an awd.
2. My favorite year is a 1992. It comes with the 6 bolt, overall good car if it was taken care of throughout its life. plus i like the body style.
3. Depends on what you want. you can get your hands on a jdm motor for ~800-1000 bucks if you want something stock, but if you were to have a motor rebuilt, you can have it done up the way you want it w/ performance stuff, race bearings, basically all the goodies.
4. Depending on condition paint/interior/history. between 2-3000 dollars for awd's, fwd's tend to go for less. but again it all depends on how bad a shape that motor is and the overall condition of the car, so the price can vary
