Doing a Jeep tour of CENTRALIA tomorrow night wanna come with?

I went to pick up my Crate engine lastnight and we drove through the town of Centralia. You have all seen the pictures of the bare grass fields seperated by the grid layout of pavement which was once the roads and alleys of Centralia. Anyway, on the way home I was intrigued by the smoking mounds of dirt. My brother, being the asshat he is talked me into putting the old XJ into 4hi and driving up the mounds and into the woods.

As some of you may know, in the attempts to put out the fires hundreds of metal pipes were drilled into the ground and used to pump water into the mines. Weeeeeell they had to make roads to get to these pipes right?

We spent a good 3 hours with a crate engine in the trunk off roading through paths wide enough for three people to walk side-by-side through. Passing ruins of homes, old cars, you name it. We clocked 18.8 miles of paths and would have gotten lost if we hadn't gone straight at all the intersections we got to. I was going to go back up tomorrow if anyone wants to tag along we can meet at Cabelas and you can see Centralia like hardly anyone has seen before. There were several over looks which you could see for miles down at the towns of Ashland, Shamokin, and Mt. Carmel. Photographers in the house, heres a chance to add some sweet pictures to your portfolios.

This is why I bought a Jeep!

Ill post a couple dozen pics tonight.

^Its all been picked over pretty good. Old fords and such. Lots of old engine parts. Blocks, trannys, fenders.

I would seriously call off. Its that worth it. Call off sick lets go up! I would have kept going but some of the trails were so steep the Crate was sliding back into my rear window lol.

you should have stopped in st. clair...if you go behind the walmart on 61, there are TONS of trails and off road areas to cruise around, great for Jeeps, dirtbikes, quads

can't afford to take off. I wouldn't get paid and I've got to drive to baltimore to pick up my g/f's parents from the airport, then drive to philly for a graduation party, then drive back to Hershey...all on saturday.

^We didn't pass a single "NO TRESPASSING" "DANGER" or "WARNING" sign. We were driving on the actual street roads of Centralia, passing benches, light poles, broken stop lights, and it eventually turned form pavement to dirt, to gravel, to smoking dirt mounds then into the woods.

Believe me, I wasn't in the mood to off road with a crate engine if it woulda ooked un safe I would used it as a excuse to not go.

I used to ride my dirtbike over there every weekend. Start in Treverton and end up over in Centralia. Get gas and go back.

google it, you'll find tons of pictures.

I believe a small amount of people still live there? or is taht the place near the nuclear plant?

Centralia was a mining town but the coal under the ground caught fire and is still burning. Not a safe place to be because there is a fire under the ground...which means space is under the ground as well. Parts of the road have dropped, some bubbled up, etc. Tons of sulfer floating around the place.

There is a section of the highway (rt. 61) that they had to close because the road buckled. They made a small 2 lane road to go around that section. Yes, people still live in centralia.

You probably wouldn't want to take your wrx there either.

Passed by there on the way to Knoebels a long time ago, and always thought about it.

Actually, on my way to maple grove last weekend I was within 5 minutes of it. Heard of it before, but didn't think I'd be that close.
