stop and frisk in philadelphia? yay or nay?

give your thoughts on this...

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/home_...fer_city_.html

oops forgot to give my opinion. which is go for it, yeah it may cause a ruckus at first but if the people of philadelphia really want there city's crime rate to go down this seems like the last hope. theres a huge uproar in philly how the police arent doing anything, well heres your last option.

i think this is one of those things that looks good on paper but when applied to the street it could cause some problems. sure the evidence shows that in NYC crime is down after the implementation of this law up there but there could be other factors involved that are helping eliminate crime that the public doesnt know about because law officials want us to think what they implement is the real reason. i think it warrants a trial period sort of thing in philly and if all goes well then make it an everyday thing but i see a lot of potential problems arising from this

oh i'm sure there will be a bunch of racial profiling complaints...but hey, if you can't even walk around near the Temple U campus without looking over your shoulder then this is just one of the things they will have to do....i can see it already on NBC 10 news...."that pig over there grabbed me and frisked me b/c i'm black" "did he find a gun" "well yeah, but it wasn't mines, and i didn't even know it was there"

i don't care to be honest, just as long as it's not 100% random. ie: car with tinted windows, let's see what he/she is doing

[edit] did you ever see how many people get pulled over for routine traffic stops on COPS and end up having an unregistered weapon? this is where it'll prove useful

"Blacks were more than six times more likely to be stopped than whites, and Hispanics were more than four times more likely to be stopped than whites," wrote Pace Law School professor Bennett L.

Thats racial profiling, and is illegal. It would be nice to think that these stop and frisk procedures will be random..but I'm sure they will not be stopping everyone, the average age of an offender is roughly 18-25 I think, so with that in mind why would they stop people at random, I don't think they'll be stopping older women as much as younger men.

i think they should make it routine protocol for traffic stops and use their 'best judgment' on all other situations

They could stop me everyday. My thing is if you don't have anything to hide what's the problem? People are people and there is gonna be racial profiling going on, to all races because there are many ethnic police officers in philadelphia. I can guarantee black cops will be frisking more whites than blacks, and vis versu.

This will just end up being more harassment for legal gun owners like myself. I guess it is all for the greater good but at what cost to our civil liberties of privacy. I think this is nothing but the government showing its control over us and saying it can do what it wants in attempts to belittle the constitution. In my mind a frisk is a search period and that is usually protected by illegal search and seizure but hey they are the government they can do what they want. Too many people are quick to say well it will make us safer, no it won't it will make us more like a public that is bullied and harassed by our government and its officials. This may seem radical to some but where does it stop? Next it will be searches of your house cause a policeman happens to be walking by and thinks something may be not right. I am all for being safe and for the government making our way of life safer but i am not willing to give up my rights for that. Too many people have died for this countries freedoms for those freedoms to be washed down the toilet.

I am sure someone will quote this saying i am stupid or something similar but i am not going to be petty i will only respond to logical arguments.

The Patriot Act has taken away our privacy and rights more than the average person may know. For example, did you know that in the name of terrorism one can be arrested, jailed and held without bail and without a trial for as long as necessary, thats scray.

The problem is that if you give an inch, they will take a mile. If they have no reason to search you then they shouldn't be allowed to. And searching you because you look guilt isn't proof enough to get a warrent, so it shouldnt be proof enough to search you.

I have been pulled over before and the officer asked me to pop the trunk so that he could look inside (he suspected that I had purchased alcohol underage). And I told him no. Yes he was pissed, but he didn't have a warrent. I had nothing to hide, but I also have the right to my own privacy.

All he has to do is say he saw u coming from a state store and your done, probable cause. But anyway i have done stuff like that before but the best way to dissolve that situation quickly is to say yes unless you have something to hide then say no.

philly has doing stop and frisk for years. for some reason its just in the spotlight now. and as far as racial profiling goes, well just look at the statistics of who is committing the violent crimes. deal with it. take, for example, you go to the airport and see several men dressed like they're from the middle east getting on a plane. i dont know about you, but ill take the next flight.

DISCLAIMER: im not trying to sound racist, but it is what it is.

He saw me and a buddy come out of steak and hoagie factory. And said he was pulling me over for a brake light out. I had pulled into a parking lot to get off of 611, and could clearly see in a reflection from a window behind me that i had no lights out, so i asked him to show me the light...It just went from there!
