Driveshaft options?

I've been reading up on the options and such for replacement driveshafts... and the options are basically between two different materials... carbon fiber and aluminum...i figured i'd post up the info ive gathered and see what others have to say on this mod

Material: Carbon fiber:
cost: ~$1150
weight: 13.5lbs
problems: very little known issues besides harmonic vibration on some cars

Material: aluminum
cost: ~ $460
weight: 12.5lbs
problems: need to modify (read: bang with hammer) your floorpan

i personally like the carbon one despite its cost strictly because i dont need to modify anything... lets hear some more opinions!

i've heard of fitment issues with any one piece driveshaft... which was enough to keep me away, although i think the aluminum driveshaft is very appealing for the price otherwise.

what companies are you referencing with the pieces listed above?

uh-lot

see ok id go cf
is sooo tough and i know acpt will guarentee there stuff for life
and its definately not worth getting mad at your floorpan
substantial gains can be had by lightening that thing up it weighs alot
one sti owner wrote a review i think on nasioc and said he felt a huge difference like 30 whp
and if you can feel a difference its definately a substantial gain

i believe its been weighed at 29 lbs.

as far as HP gains... its not a certain number.. its a percentage gain.. so the more you add power mods... the bigger gain youll make... and its very similar to the percentage gain you would make with a lighter flywheel.

So you're removing about 1/2 the weight of the shaft. I can see how that would make a difference. I can't justify 2 1/2 the cost for carbon fiber though.

well the carbon fiber vs. aluminum argument is a strong argument for both sides... as far as differences in cost, torsional riggidity, etc etc

I think there are better ways to lighten your car and better parts to put your money towards my .02.

I prefer the alum shafts over the carbon fiber ones. With the alum shafts you get about 13-15* of deflection out of them, which will help reduce driveline wear and tear. I dont think the carbon shafts will deflect at all. The last few alum shafts I put in, I only had to remove some of the sound deadner from the tunnel to get it to clear.

I would get the alum shaft over a carbon one and then put the extra money twords a set of light wheels and you would most likely end up with a better net weight loss in the drivetrain over just a carbon shaft.
