so my car is dying...

ok.i have a 97 eclipse gs ---- my dad put new brakes on my car this past weekend..((although i dont think this has anything to do with the problem))...and i go to drive my car this morning. and its working fine on my way to an interview.. and i go to leave.. and i drive about 5 mins and all the lights in my dash..flicker.. for like a 1/2 a second and im like ..whats this all about..and i continue to drive. and like 5 mins later. i come to a light.. and im waiting for it to turn green. and theres a car in front of me...and all the sudden my car sounds like it winds up it rolls back a little ((its not stick..its an auto)) and it jerks foward, it freaks me out, cuz i almost hit the car in front of me...and i didnt take my foot off the break....and so it does this 2 more times...each at a stoplight.. and then after the 3rd stoplight that im at... i turn..and it started to do the same thing...while im driving. so i pull over and call my papa *cuz im scared to drive it any further..i dont wanna blow my car up* ...so i call him, and he says to call for a tow truck. my papa thinks it might be the tranny..but the tow truck guy...looked at my fluid and says it looks fine ((my family has known the guy since before i was born, so i trust him in what he says..what could it honestly be?? any ideas??

my sisters car was doing the same kinda crap and the fluid looked fine.
turns out 2nd 3rd and 4th gear bands were all burned out, as well as the solenoids.


my vote is for the trans.

i wasnt looking at the RPM's when this was happening..i was just terrified of my car blowing up ...lol..so i pulled over and shut it off...and called for a tow truck..my dads gonna take a look at it tonight... hopefully its ok.


are there any other possibilities?

well..update..still dont know the problem..we ran the code reader..it says the oxygen sensor in like 3 different codes given..but thats the reason my check engine light is ALWAYS on..lol...but my dad is gonna like help me fix it as to what he thinks the problem is..i told him people are sayin its the trans..but he doesnt think its that...sooo...its all on him lol...he changed the fuel filter ...and i test drove it ..but it jerked in the driveway..when i was inside getting my license he said..and when i was at the end of my driveway...it almost stalled...my dad told me to keep driving ...so i went..and when i came to the light. just as i was stopping it jerked once more...im done for the night..maybe more work tomorrow. OY!

def the trans. when the gear pops out and engages again, it means the teeth on the gears are broken. so it grabs the gear and then it doesnt "broken tooth" hence the jerking of back and forth.

better explanation. the gear is spinning when in drive. the gear pops out " neutral " its not spinning and then it grabs again " drive " it starts spinning again and thats the jerking you feel.

if you ever notice, put the car in neutal while coasting and then put it in drive, the car will jerk, but in your situation its doing it on its own. which is why im saying its a broken tooth or something.

still dont know what the problem with my car is.... my dad took a look at it..he changed the fuel filter and the foward o2 sensor...thinking one may be the problem..well it wasnt it...he didnt change the other o2 sensor cuz he couldnt find one to buy. since he couldnt figure out the problem...and god knows i cant either lol..he took it to a mechanic he heard from a family friend, that is really good, and has good realistic prices. so we were "alright, what the heck, lets have someone diagnose it, and tell us the problem before he fixes it" well... 2 days later, we hear back...the guy cant fix it cuz its not something he can do....he says my car needs a new computer...my boyfriend..was on the same side as him, when he first new what my car was doing...the guy told my dad that we have to take it to the dealership...so my dad called a mitsubishi dealership..and they said that if its not just the computer... it could cost up to $2000 to fix it....thats just to fix it..not including the $100 bucks an hr to figure out whats wrong....wtf! ugh..yea...so we're gonna try and get capaciters to see if thats just the problem and my bf will replace those...if not..i dont know what the heck ill do cuz...i cant afford 2k...i already owe my parents 3k for the car...

if you take a ECU out of a junked car you still need to have some1 (dealer) reprogram it for your car (VIN) and whatnot, or the car might not start. I know this is the case with newer cars, not sure about a 97 though
