The Official 2007 Phillies Thread

Since there hasn't been any many threads about the Phillies, and figuring the bad start they've had.. some fans may have been hiding, here is the thread to talk about the Phitin Phillies this season. 4 game win streak, are the Phillies ready to contend having the record of 8-11?

What I like about the Phillies:

Jimmy Rollins - what is there not to like about this guy? he has always been a proven key player through his years. this seems to be the best starting year.

Good batters are starting to hit... good..? Better, still not the best.

The outfield - Shane and Aaron are clutch outfielders.. always make great plays. Burrell is good... but big and slow, but theswitching of him for Bourn when they have the lead really helps their D even more.

Infield - Rollins/Utley/Howard... great combo. enough said. I'm not so sold with Nunez/Helms, although Helms is hitting good.

Brett Myers to the bullpen - good move? I think so.. it will help him learn to pitch better in clutch situations when he becomes a starter again.

Starting pitching - Has been okay.. Cole Hamels is some sort of saint. Other guys, a little shakey.

What I don't like:

The Bullpen - we all know the situation

Tom Gordon - I like Tom Gordon, he's a good guy.. but until he shows up with a curveball, he' on the bad side of the list.

Rod Barajas - Besides having good aim throwing out steals, egh... give me Chris Coste back! He is hitting .160... barf!

What about all of you other Phillie's fans.. how do you feel?

i think im pretty much feeling the same way as you on all accounts. one thing i'd like to add to the bad column though is ryan howards hitting in the early going. yea yea we all know he was rookie of the year, sop****re mvp, home run champ blah blah. if he doesnt start putting up numbers and knockin in runs then we're in trouble. another bad thing is this. the phillies lead the league in on base percentage. however, they also lead the league in runners left on base. we're getting on base and out hitting most every team we play for the most part and not taking advantage of it. we have been lately and we've won 4 in a row so we need to keep it up. thats all for now im tired of typing.

i damn sure hope they're serious. im really enjoying seeing a philly team put a string of wins together and doing it well instead of pulling them out at the last minute. I will say this though, i know they took a few from the Astros which is good because the astro's are a good team but the nationals? come on, they should be pounding them and its good to see they are. Im just waiting to see if they can carry this momentum into a series with a national league powerhouse to see how they fair. that said, i'm very happy with the way they look at this point in time.

I think they take 2 out of 3 from Florida. As long as the bats stay hot, pitching will be fine.

i'd take that bet. i also agree with the bats needing to stay hot and i see no reason why they wont. seems as if howard is getting into the swing of things (no pun intended) and charlie manuel (ex batting coach) has been working with a few of the players that have asked him for help. j. roll is on fire, chase went 5-5 tonight, rowand had a 12 game hit streak before tonight, wes helms is getting his bat dirty so we're lookin good right now. as long as we can get a decent size lead to take a little pressure off of the bullpen i think they'll be ok.

Agreed. I wish they would make a move at catcher though.. or at least try to bring Chris Coste back.

im willing to bet that they are in the process of getting him back. carlos ruiz or whatever the hell his name is, isnt cuttin the mustard right now. Coste should be off the DL and i'd assume hes rehabbing in the minors for a short while before they stick him back in the lineup. i liked what i saw of him last season and they really need a good catcher so i'm keepin my hopes alive for Coste.

I would keep Ruiz. I would ditch Barajas asap.

i second that. barajas is garbage and ruiz is only slightly better in my mind even though he really hasnt done anything to hurt the phils. im jus glad lieberthal is gone, but seriously get coste back in the lineup

im fairly confident he wont hit the most this year but i have a feeling hes gonna have a great year as he did last year. he started last year the exact same way he's starting this season so i think it'll come. i'm pretty pissed they lost today but oh well

Honestly, I havent been a big Phillies fan, but impressed with how they shaped them selves up in a week. I am a bit more of an Atlanta Braves fan, have been since I was maybe 5 or 6, but sadly, we have had a terrible time since about 2000 or so in keeping up the with the Mets for the NL East title.

We need a bullpen. END OF STORY. We have blown SO many games with ****ty pitching. If management would stop digging for crap and hoping for a miracle and actually picked up some good pitchers we wouldn't be digging ourselves out of a hole right now.
