Just the flash on the camera for now. I'd like to get the r1 system but it's a little spendy.

I like the idea of the pictures but they look like a pop up flash was used. I am not saying they aren't good just that you can tell my the shadows and the light fall off. What was the lighting there maybe re try them with natural light only.

I felt the same. I also feel like you could try some slight variations in composition to make them more works of art and less scienctific looking?

Great looking pics man! On one hand I like the dark backdrop the flash left, I think it works well with the shallow DOF. But on the other hand I'd like to see what the shots would look like with some natural lighting and a more vibrant backdrop.

To get the entire flower @ 1:1 I had to shoot at f35. When they were shot at anything less than that aperture the effect of them having evil eyes with gaping mouths was lost. As I'm sure you all know the light needed for that f stop is alot. The pop up flash is my only flash "for now" so it had to do. Remember the size of these flowers "this >--< wide", to get them to this size on screen and sharp is'nt easy. I have more shot at a lower fstop I'll post up later. thanks for the comments

Judging from the exif it looks like you were at f10 and f20 in some i would have tried it with natural light and at like 2.8 or whatever your lowest is.

The lens is a sigma 3.5 180 hsm macro. There was nowhere near enough natural light "6:30ish pm in the shade" to go that option handheld. These flowers were about an inch off the ground so the tripod was not an option. Simply put flashing them was the only way to get the "little monster" effect. Shooting at 3.5 @ 1:1 handheld = nearly impossible to catch dof. We all know it's a game of compromises. I have some macro shots from yesterday I have to download. I'll post some up if they are worthy.
