EcuTek or Accessport?
easy question. hahaha. i dont plan on going very far. just turboback exhaust, headers, uppipe, i/c hoses, turbo inlet hose. and then in the far future(like a year) a turbo upgrade and a FMIC. so which one would u choose? im looking for reliability, not too worried about how fast but want something faster u no.

I personally like the accessport. I dont have one but i know 2 people who do and they love it. I want to get one soon. Utec is best if you are going to heavily mod car and/or want the easiest tuning capibilities.

I wouldn't do either if you are planning a turbo upgrade because you will have to get retuned and (B) there aren't really that many good ecutek tuners in the area. Utec is a different story and much easier to get support for. In the end, you need EM that people WILL support and can be tuned when you upgrade your setup. Just don't corner yourself in the future with your EM, because it is the most important and critical mod you can buy besides the turbo.
I'm not a huge fan of the accessport at all because the tunes on them aren't all that great.

ok - dumb moment here- is ecutek a third type of em? seems like in this thread people are using utec and 'ectuek' interchangeably... am i missing something?

theres UTEC, Accessport, EcuTek, Hydra.......... motec........ umm....... yea... thats all i can remeber.
the Utec, EcuTek and hydra are dyno tunable or street tunable. the hydra is expensive, hard to find a good tuner but ultimately the best. Accessport is plug and play or u can get the street tuner later and tune it.

Drifter86, Have you decided on a turbo yet? Utec has a tuner out too. I think Bryan has it in his car. |

i think youve got it figured out but i just want to clarify what each of these EMS's are about...
Cobb Accessport: A user-end reflash with a handful of off the shelf maps for the most popular mods. This reflashes the ECU completely but is not user tuneable unless you splurge for the new AccessTuner ($400) which allows you to custom tune your maps with a laptop. The AP goes for $600 new and about $500 used. There are two different versions... one for 02-03, and one for 04 (and i think 05?). Their maps make impressive numbers considering that they are off the shelf and very easy to flash, but nothing beats a custom tune done by an expert. UTEC: A user-end tuneable piggyback system. You can log using a laptop and you can go in and tune your fuel, timing, and boost maps without any other accessories (besides a laptop). It comes with off the shelf base maps, but it really needs some custom tuning to get the most out of it. If you get a UTEC i highly recommend that you have it professionally tuned, but it can also be easily tweaked by the user. They run about $950 new these days i think and about $700 used. EcuTek: A reflash that can only be done by a licensed tuner. With this you would go to a shop with a license to tune Ecuteks and a dyno, and have a custom tune done... when they get it just right they'll flash the map onto your ECU and voila. I hear great things about it but if you change your setup a lot its probably not the best option since you'd have to make multiple trips to a professional tuner. Xotic has this setup for $650 including the license and a custom tune. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And i have the TurboXS Tuner, but it is nothing more than a wideband. It interfaces seamlessly with the UTEC but does nothing more than give me a wideband AFR to help tune with. bryan

just to add on to bryan's post- i am seeing utec's for 600-650. i got mine for 618 shipped - not too shabby and well worth it as compared to an ap, imo.

it looks like im gonna go with ecutek.
later on i would like to get a twin scroll set up hahha VF39. but ill prolly end up with a VF34, i want something still daily drivable. id rather get a specific tune i think so i can extract the most horsepower out of it. i dunno if ill do the 1000 uppipe install and parts+ecutek+tune or just the 650 ecutek install and tune. I gotta start piecing things together. anyone wanna help me with an uppipe install if i decide to do it myself? id like to have someone who knows what they are doing there. haha.

i think there are a couple guys here who could help u out with that and do regular 'install parties' but i'll let them chime in on that one...
is it 650 for the ecutek r eflash each time you change something and want the tune modified?
