Custom Turbo - Who has done it

I'm not talking about an Ebay special(or maybe), but just wondering who has built turbo kits from scratch, as in piecing it out from company to company. I originally thought about purchasing Greddy's &HKS basic turbo kit but the cost is not logical at this time? think piecing it out is the route I want to go, hopefully by next spring. In my mind, buying piece by piece will be better for me than spending one lump sum on it. I highly doubt they are going to make a ultimate turbo kit for my car that i "Must have" in the year+ coming. So these are the parts I could think of. & if you could list anything I missed & what you have done. Are you happy with it, any regrets/big mistakes?

Turbo (most likely Turbonetics t3/to4e)
Manifold (full race)
wastegate
BOV (greddy)
Intercooler
Boost Controller
3" downpipe
Oil Supply & Drain Kit
Aluminum Intercooling Piping
Turbo Intake Filter
Gauges: EGT, Oil, & missing something else
Nuts,bolts,clamps
Management system (K-Pro)
***i'm still learning as much as I can about Turbo's & performance in general, so please don't hate to much***

Thanks in advance everyone

it's the route I'm planning on going. I should be able to have a big turbo kit for under or close to 800 by the time it's all said and done.

Well thats a basic list...you need injectors of some sort also thats dependant on your power goal...same with the turbo don't just buy a random turbo, look over compressor maps or talk to someone who can or find a car with a similar set-up and see...I stay away from turbonetics turbos...I don't have personal experience but have herd some negative stuff, I'd just grab a garrett...also Full Race is going to rap you for a mani and you will need the matching Downpipe, can't just pick them up seperate unless you are going to make your own custon DP...BOV I think there is only 2 choices Tial 50mm or HKS ssqv...both are going to be able to handle any amount of boost you can throw at them, i don't pick BOV based on sound...for the guages EGT will be nice but isn't needed the 2 basics you need are oil PSI and of course boost, after than I'd get a wideband 02, not the crappy narrow band ones they are **** just a light show...oh you also need couplers for the IC pipping, I didn't see that on the list...uhm..you won't need a boost controller but it wil be nice if you plan to turn up the boost, its safer to run the wastegate spring at what boost level you want (lowest level) and then a decent mbc or a ebc to turn it up...some mbc can cause boost spikes so I'd run wastegate pressure atleast till you get tuned if you are using a cheap mbc...ok well thats all i could think of off the top right now...

Here is the current custom turbo set up but a few things might change as we go along.

Turbo (Garrett, not sure about the trim but I think its to big for the civic that I plan to boost. the turbine side is .84)
Manifold (was going to use an ebay mani but I'm going with the custom made turbo mani from fabricator I met. Anyone interested let me know)
wastegate (tial 38mm)
BOV (tial or hks ssq)
Intercooler (front mount w/custom bent pipes)
Boost Controller (manual but might move to electronic)
downpipe (the current turbo uses a v band clamp so my downpipe is going to be custom)
Oil Supply & Drain Kit (standard steel braided kit)
Gauges: vac/boost, Oil psi, wideband
fueladjustable regulator, 255lb/h walbro pump, 455 dsm injectors or maybe smaller like 330cc
Management system (going to chip either a p06 or p28 and us crome or uberdata software to tune)

Misc stuff: going to tap the compressor side of the turbo for vac to the wastegate. might use an eagle vac manifold block for all other vac lines. various lines are going to be swaped for steel braided lines. etc......

Thats a good start man, glad you aren't going with an ebay mani...need more specs for the turbo but a .84 exhaust is kind of large especially if its going on a D, I run a .63 on my LS and I don-t start spooling till around 4500rpms...I'd atleast use DSM 450s they are good till around 300hp maybe a little less but better to have some extra room you'd ratehr run larger injectors at a lower rate than max out small ones, not meaning grab some 800cc injectors but 450 is a good place to start and they are cheap...oh also don't bother tapping into the compressor side of the turbo, run the wastegate vac source off the intake manifold..if you tap the compressor you wastegate will open the compressor side see (ex. 7psi) which won't account for any pressure loss over your charge pipping and FMIC, meaning you might only be boosting 5psi into the motor...

Anyway you could hook it up with pics? simonj21@gmail.com if possible. Looks good. Did you already get all the parts listed, or is that the final list?

I used to have a SOHC Greddy kit about 8 years ago on my Z6, but everything I did after that was custom. The current setup going on my LS/Vtec is:

FR T3/T67 H.O
FR Prostreet manifold
Custom IC piping
Spearco IC
RC 1000cc
Edelbrock IM
Tial 38mm

If I were to go the kit route, it would be Full Race or Revhard.

Most of my kit is pieced together although sometimes its cheaper and easier to buy a full kit. Parts that kill your budget are intercooler piping and custom dp's. Some shops charge out the ass for these parts and its almost more convenient/cheaper to purchase a kit.

I'm not sure what you budget or goals are but I've done quite a few turbo installs on K series. The budget way to make reliable power is:

Revhard topmount (proven to fit up to a T3/T67HO!!)
Custom DP/Custom intercooler piping
Intercooler of your choice
Tial 50MM, Greddy, HKS BOV
Tial 38MM gate
RC Injectors depends on your goals.
Hondata K-Pro

Now for boost control K-pro is badass. With one of the latest revisions you can run a GM solenoid off a Typhoon and control boost! The part is around 40 bucks w/ the pigtail connector and allows you to do run off the wastegate spring, up the boost, or even run boost by gear. I'm selling my AVCR to go this route, its that effective.

Lastly, remember this stuff adds up fast. Your stock clutch won't last long and tuning can be quite expensive. If your looking for more than ~12 PSI you need a 3 bar map sensor. Moral of the story its not slap on a turbo and go.

Good luck, let me know if you need any help on turbo selection, etc.

I'm pretty far from Harrisburg, I would say about 1.5 hrs

I have and will always, have Evans tune my cars. He's done my setup two times, this will be the third. I can't say enough about his knowledge and skills.

Honestly, Full Race is a badass kit using everything quality you could ever piece together. Peakboost is releasing their K series kit real soon and they are also very good quality. Plus the price is a little cheaper than FR.

Yeah, Jeff is pretty well know all around the US. He was just out in Arizona tuning a few cars for Full-Race. I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable with cars but every time I go there I learn something new. He practically picked out this crazy fuel system I'm putting together.

My names Bill BTW, if you need any help just shoot me a pm
