^Private music site. High quality rips. 1.4 million seeders. 43 thousand leechers. More than 25 Million torrents tracked. I have 2 invites left, but you must have at least a 1:1 ratio on at least one other torrent tracker that you can show me. P.S. Two questions for you: What med school did you go to? And, how much do you make as a Resident. Last edited by PotenzaSub; 03-26-2007 at 11:57 PM. |

^Currently in DeSales.
Hardly anything after my OPTIONAL mal-practice. You normally dont get paid anything cept I held a part time job at the hospital since HS so they would bare the brunt of the school bills. I work at the HS part time and knock out clinical shadowing hours as well. Hence why I am ALWAYS BUSY.

^ the terminology makes 'bittorrent' seem more complicated than it really is.
Before you can understand the terminology, you need to understand how the 'bittorrent' protocol works: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/bittorrent.htm (read pages 1,2, and 3 of that article) [I'll be using the term 'music file' to simplify my explantion for you. But, in reality bittorrent can be used to transfer any kind of file you want and even entire directories (ie. folders that contain music files from a whole album).] To start downloading torrent files you need a tracker (like the site I gave you above). A 'tracker' is simply a website where you can search for and download torrent files. (More info on tracker sites below.) Torrent files are very small files (the size of a text file). They do not contain the music files you want to download. They only tell you where you can find other 'peers' - other computers on the internet - who have the entire music file, or part of the music file you want to download. Seeders: Computers who have 100% of the music file and are uploading pieces of the file to your computer. Leechers: Although this may seem like a bad term, it isn't. A leecher is someone who does not yet have 100% of of the music file. Leechers are in the process of downloading the file from other seeders and even other leechers on the network (the howstuffwork.com link above explains this in more detail and with diagrams). Peers: All of the computers who are uploading and/or downloading a file. (ie. the combination of seeders and leechers) You're probably wondering how you will be able to read a torrent file in the first place. To read a torrent file, you need a 'bittorrent client'. I've tried about 4 different clients in the two years I've been using bittorrent. The best one is utorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/). Bittorrent clients are free to download. Once you have installed a bittorrent client, you can now open torrent files. When you open a torrent file, your client will ask you where you want to download the music file (or any other type of file depending on what it is). Once you specify a place on your computer for the client to start downloading the file you can begin the download. The client will find other computers who have pieces of the file and start downloading. But, you won't only be downloading. As mentioned in the howstuffworks.com link, you will also be uploading to other peers. Read the howstuffworks.com link for more info on this. When you reach 100%, DO NOT shut down your client. Like I said before, when you reach 100% you become a 'seeder'. Now, you are uploading the music file to other leechers. Don't worry though because you don't have to upload forever. The bittorrent community only asks that you seed untill you reach a 1:1 upload:download ratio. This means that you just need to upload as much as you have downloaded. So, if the file you have just completed downloading is 5 Megabytes. You need to upload at least 5 Megabytes. I make it a habit of seeding a lot more than this. I usually seed untill I have reached a 2:1 ratio. How do you know what your ratio on a specific torrent is? Well, in uTorrent, you can see it in your details. It's there along with all the other information (ie. torrent name, # of seeders, # of leechers, etc.). Just scroll right of maximize uTorrent and you'll see your ratio. Some extra info: Leecher: Although I said that the term leecher is not necessarily negative, it can be. A leecher can also be someone who does not seed when they have 100% of the file. They are people who immediately shut down their client once they have reached 100%. Trackers: There are two different types of trackers: public (www.torrentz.com) and private (www.oink.com). Public trackers are good for novice users (I started with them). But, if you want really good content and you want your torrents to be well seeded - meaning they have a lot of seeders so you can download the file quicker - you may want to sign up with private trackers. Private trackers require a password; public trackers do not require a password. This may seem like a lot of complicated information. But, once you start using bittorrent it will all come together for you. Once you see your client actually downloading files, you'll understand all of this better. Wow. I can't believe I just explained all of that. Oh, and I know there are probably a dozen or so typos up there; sorry in advance. Last edited by PotenzaSub; 03-27-2007 at 12:57 AM. |
