Two Weeks Notice

I'm going to quit my job. Is it necessary for me to give two weeks notice considering my supervisors don't write up the shedule for the following week untill the Thursday before the schedule is supposed to take effect? I was considering simply giving one week notice in a formal letter.

*edit: Sorry for typos. I was rushing out the door this morning and wanted to have some responses for tonight.

It is professional courtesy to give at least two weeks notice no matter what. Presenting something in writing/email would also be good in addition to a verbal discussion, so that you have some sort of paper trail.

2 weeks notice is best, even if you dont use the employer as a reference. I did quit a job w/o 2 weeks notice, and when a new company was looking to hire me, they called, and gave a bad reference.

I dont feel it's neccessary in certain circumstances, If your leaving under good conditions yeah sure give your two weeks notice so you can go back...But In all reality A company isnt gonna say "Hey here's two weeks to find a job then your fired" So why give them a courtesy they wont give you???

I'd say it depends on the situation. If you're already on bad terms with the mgmt, I wouldn't. If you're on ok/good terms, give it, just incase the above happens where you get a bad reference...

if you want to use the job as a reference, or you decide down the road you may want to return, use a two weeks notice

It's pretty much a standard I thought?

Just common courtesy.

Can I ask the terms of your leaving. Is it under good terms?

Give a two weeks notice, but request that you be removed from the schedule as soon as possible.

I have always given two weeks notice with any job I have left due to the fact I always remain in the same field, everyone knows everyone so it is always good to be known as a decent guy. One job I worked for, I was there almost 3 years but one day everything just blew up and I was so livid I called my direct supervisor and let him know I quit and was walking out the door, funny thing is anytime the company has been contacted for a reference it was always good.

I offered my manager out into the parking lot when I quit Walgreens after I graduated high school. He was a dick.

Give 2 weeks.
If they cut you loose immediately, so be it, many company's do.
If they let you live up to your notice, it's a bridge you never burned.
Can't lose.

2 weeks is always a good plan, just in case you need to go back.

i've only given notice once
the nice thing about PA is that they cant give out horrible references
the new company can ask whatever they want adn get serious answers, but the old company cant just trash talk you or anything
hell when i quit Hooters, i told the manager off and threw a stool and asked him to step outside. i got a standing ovation from the customers and the girls. it was great! then i was in like 3 weeks after that and he came in from home just to kick me out, i got 6 free beers and free fries that night cuz he booted me before i could pay
