the router should have a WAN port to plug into. Run a cat-5 from the modem to that port in the router, and plug ur PC into any of the other 4 ports, and ur roommate can have wireless as well.

Your gonna need a router in there. How old is the router you have? It shouldnt really be bogging things down. What kind of speeds is your connection running?

sounds like a bad router or something. having a firewall and multiple connections shouldnt really slow it down..if you have two routers why dont you use both of them and let him have one and you take the other. that should eliminate your problems. if its possible to do that with your setup

Yea.....your not gonna be able to split cat-5....it needs all 8 wires for proper communicate, or else everything is gonna fxxxed. Honestly, you do need a router in there somewhere, or else ur not getting internet. The firewall should have nothing to do with the network bogging down. Try to see if you can PING the router as well. To do that, here are some instructions (since I dont know ur computer/networking backgrounds)
Assuming you use Windows 2K or XP 1. Click Start 2. Run 3. In run, type in CMD, hit enter button 4. In black and white command prompt, type in IPCONFIG 5. There will be an address for default gateway 6. Type PING (address for default gateway) Look for the stastics, should be somewhere in the 1ms-3ms range. If its higher then that, check to make sure the roommate isnt downloading a lot, and also run virus scans on both machines, since many viruses are designed to run various attacks to other networks from yours. If all else fails, get a newer router. I prefer D-Link myself.

Your pullin down alot of bandwidth for a normal router. The only solution is to man up and get a commercial grade router or to tell your roomate to piss off and get his own connection.

keep both machines going to the single multi-port router.
if you wanna bypass the firewall, just put your machine on the dmz, or port forward all the ports u want open. if you're worried about slowness it's not gonna help u to bypass the router- tell ur roomie to stop downloading ****

800k is poop slow for cable either way. The router is the least of your worries if that's really your connection speed. Anyway, the firewall and all can be turned off in the router if you really wanted to do it. Last edited by IMPREZvWRX; 02-18-2007 at 04:28 AM. |
