Penn state Abington

Hey everyone. Getting ready to pick a college to go to (I'm off to a very late start lol). I am thinking about going to penn state abington for like 2 years then transfering into main campus or somewhere else. I am looking into their Mechanical engineering program cause i have always liked to tinker with stuff and build complex projects, etc. Anyone have any experiance in this major or with this school? Also i may take the 2 years here and then transfer into a school that offers a good automotive engineering major.

Don't make the same mistake I did! Apply to main campus first!!!

I go to Abington (this is my last semester). I an an IST student but i have taken many engineering classes.

Pros:
- Small classes
- Only a couple teachers (in engineering) so you get to know them
- Classes are easier (tests are easier, less is required)

Cons:
- Live at home (good or bad, depends)
- No campus life (imagine high school again, go to class then go home)
- No major parties like main campus (due to lack of dorms/apartments)

If you are all work, and want a great GPA but are willing to give up 2 years of partying (unless you find out of state friends with apartments) then Abington is great. You should leave with an EASY 3.5 GPA and will be able to take every class your major requires to be accepted. You have no choice but to finish your major at main campus if its engineering. If you are at main campus, you will be way more distracted, and your grades will suffer, and you might not be able to meet all the requirements of the engineering college (they are strict)

There are a lot of oppertunities at abington. They have a strong robotic program with atleast 2 competitions a year. You are close to Philadelphia so you cna get an internship early.

My first year was ok because my friend had an apartment. Its just hard to meet people there because there is no reason to hang out on campus because theres nothing to do there.

Any more questions?

Wow... that really sums it up lol. I applied to main already yet i dont think i will get in... (Didnt do so hot on the SAT's... yet well enough to get into abington and stuff). Its not cause I didnt know the stuff its just that im not good at tests like that.. I figure abington will sort of introduce me to the stuff and i can see if its the path that I want to take. My grades in my classes are usually up to par and I think I might be able to pull it off. Thanks for the help.

I agree 100% with Vypurr. I went to Penn State Berks and even lived there but it was so small and so quiet. Even though the school had dorms and residents it was just so boering. I stayed for one semester and transferred to Temple so I could get an actual college experience and meet new people. I guess it depends on the person but I've learned that Penn State campuses other than main are just like being back in high school.

Altoona is the only other worth goin to other than Main, from what I hear.

If you want a better chance of getting into main, apply for a degree which is only offered there! They will have to accept you there, at which time you change it before your Jr. year!

I'm enrolled at Penn State Abington and I actually like the environment since the classes are a lot smaller and its easier to ask for assistance if needed on a particular class your taking atm. I'm transfering to temple for Pharmacy so there really is no point for me to transfer to main. In terms of the boring part about Abington you actually have to introduce yourself to people on campus to start having fun. Right now at Abington i'm just chilling and gambling most of the times with a lot of friends.

I went to Penn State Main for 5.5 years. And if you get into the main campus engineering program you can pretty much guarantee 5 or 6 years there. Everyone above has summed it up. I would not trade those years for anything in the world, but it can be very distracting and difficult to get your work done. Especially since most of your friends will not be in engineering and will not understand that you actually do have work to do every night and sometimes weekends.

On the other hand, being in that environment truly showed me what I wanted to do with my life. I spent 2.5 years in the engineering program while working as a fabricator in a performance shop. In the end I graduated with a degree in graphic design as I realized that I was not satisfied with engineering. I know own my own design firm and I am as happy as can be.

Go State.

I went to abington for 4 years and graduated for IST. I made some really good friendships and went up to main if I ever wanted to party. I enjoyed my time there.

And you drive a mustang! I miss seeing her up at school. I still think my old 80 camaro was the sickest thing to ever park on that campus.

I think I talked to the guy with the STI the one day at school. About how we park in all the corner spots because people **** up our cars. I am almost positive it was you. You said you had an srt4 and some one bashed it up. yeah the parking situation at abington sucks! There is more rice than I can handle some days. I don't know if anyone remember the blue volvo with the erector set wing! That thing was ****in sick. I also llove when it rains people floor it out of the bottom parking lot trying to do a burnout in their B16l43 swap civics.

The best thing about ABington... Motha F'in Steak N' Ho! They serve 6 packs. You just get a couple of guys that are taking a night class to go out with you before class and get all smashed. It's where I met all my freinds last semester. Steve knows what I am talking about!

Haha Yeah me too. I always try and get the corner spots if I get stuck at the bottom of sutherland. Gotta love Penn State! I wonder if they are going to have that Car show thing again? I never went to the last one. I would imagine there would be some funny ****! You can really count the nice cars on campus on one hand. Your car stuck out pretty bad there.

My freinds had a pretty good group of cars up there. My buddy Brian always used to park his Jeep on the mulch pile in upper sutherland. He drove up the hill around the guard rail into the teachers spot the one night. Then we parked in the lower teacher spot that was all chained off and drove up the big ass hill around a tree into a handicap parkiing spot next to room 9.
