flywheel for a wrx...

my buddy has a wrx that needs a clutch job. he asked the dealership about resurfacing the flywheel, and they told him that it cant be done on a wrx and that he needs to buy a new one. is there any truth to this? most flywheels are cast, and can be resurfaced by a machine shop, i cant see why the wrx one would be different.

If it's not in bad shape it can be done but if it needs to be replaced and your friend doesn't drag I would recommend going with a ACT Streetlight flywheel, feels great when going through twisties but it does make launching quite a bit harder. IIRC the ACT flywheel is cheaper that a stock replacement from the dealer.

No offense to the ACT flywheel guys.
But, in my time I have seen a few of these blow up.. High hp cars do that to aluminum flywheels.
Not only that, the friction disc that comes on them is a friggin waste. As the clutch wears so do the heads of the screws on the disc.
Exedy flywheel all the way.

And yes you can resurface it.... to a point

+1 for exedy if you get the chance to hold it and an act next to each other you can see the difference in the quality. I love mine.
