But, in other parts of the world there aren't as high expectations as there are here in the US.

I'll be honest, if you've never been that depressed that you've thought about suicide, you'll never understand it. As for this kid, it just plain sucks. I feel bad for his family. RIP young sir.

Here in the US kids are expected to get good grades, stay in school, don't be a dumbass.

In other parts of the country kids are expected to help their parents hunt for food and gather food. If they fail they starve - if they starve and become weak, and after becoming meager they can't hunt for food and they die.

Whose expectations are higher? I think that the living/dying aspect is a bit more stringent than if you Pass or Fail a class. Kids think it is the end of the world if they aren't accepted because society stereotypes so much bull**** and young kids think that is reality.

yes, BUT, kids here in the US are taught that certain things are important, certain things are not, certain things are good, and certain things are not. Its completely different here in the US then in some 3rd world country. You can't even compare them.

*edit* Well, in some cases you are. If you can't deal with "Failing a class", "Being rejected", or "Not fitting in" then there are deeper problems. Killing yourself is a pansy's way out. (Don't even begin to talk to me like "You don't understand what it is like to be depressed." - I sure as hell do)

Volunteer firefighter? Eagle scout? Sounds like this boy was just "DYING" for the approval of his peers/father.

Newsflash! Nobody cares. They never did and they never will. The closest you can get is to make damn sure you're not a burden to others. Beyond that... live (or die) for yourself.

Oh, and if you're going to blow your brains out... do it in your bathtub. Nothing leaves a bad impression with the living quite like being an asshole on your way out.

well I do agree with you there, it is a pansy's way out, but to some people being a pansy and killing yourself is better then feeling the way they do. Remember, not all depression and what not is caused by thinking you have a bad life or whatever, a lot of people have that chemical imbalance. I'm one of them, and without my medication, it doesn't matter what is going on, I'm miserable. Plain and simple.

I had to live with someone who had chronic depression for 18 years - my mother; she gets so depressed even zoloft does jack **** sometimes.
