what software do you have available? The design scale for topos is generally 1 to 200ft aka 1:24000 but that doesn't mean you cant display it 1 to 100ft.

Heres the Assignment:
Geology of My Hometown Report For this four-page report, you need to: • Identify the bedrock beneath the ground under your house or home apartment. • Describe the origin of that rock using concepts and ideas presented and related to this course. • Describe geologic events that affected the rock. • Describe any local geologic hazards that your hometown has dealt with or potentially could deal with in the future. What you will need to turn in: • A four-page (double-spaced) typed (not hand written) report. • Additional components to be included (not included in the four written pages): o Map 1: A map for the area of your home (or high-school if you don’t want to use your home) and scale it down to a single 8.5 x 11” sheet of paper. (1:24,000 scale; same as 7.5’ quad), make sure the source/author of the map, and the scale is included. o Map 2: Find a topographic map and scale it up (1:12,000 or better; use a graphics software program i.e. Canvas, PowerPoint, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc.) to show the immediate area of your home/high school. Make sure to accurately mark your home’s location. This map should be easily read, and should include a source/author and a scale. o Map 3: A Geologic map for the vicinity of your hometown. Map can be obtained and modified (with citation of source of course) to show the geology for your specific region. Make sure to include the index or key for interpreting the map, a scale, and as always the source/author of the map. • A list (work’s cited) with all of the references that you used. Format guidelines to be available on Blackboard. How to do this project: • Locate your hometown on a flat map and a topographic map. (www.mapquest.com and www.topozone.com is great for this.) If you can’t do this – well see me during office hours. • Identify the bedrock under you hometown. Resources include geologic maps (7.5’ or 15’ quad scale) at the library and state geologic survey information (a great deal is available via the internet, for PA, check out the PA DCNR website for the geologic survey) http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us). Warning: Make sure to cite online resources too, remember your words… even if you use some of these sources for reference you must cite them. • Learn about the rock unit. You will find that the Georef database available through the library’s web page is useful for this. • If the rock unit is sedimentary, describe the environment of deposition for the sediment before it became rock. Also identify the plate tectonic influences that acted upon the rock so we understand how it came to be under your hometown. • If the rock is igneous, identify the origin of the igneous activity and the depth of cooling of the magma/lava (see your class notes and textbook for some help). Also identify the plate tectonic influences that acted upon the rock so we understand how it came to be under your hometown. • If the rock is metamorphic, identify what the protolith was and then answer either the sedimentary or igneous questions above. Also identify the cause of metamorphism. • If the rock has been folded or faulted, identify the origin of the folding and faulting. • Write a well-organized, cohesive report and should you need assistance please contact the learning center, or myself as soon as possible. And I dont have any programs I know of. I just want this project overwith! Any more info would be great. I found out some of the bedrock under my house anyway. Im gonna work on it more tommorow im tired and getting frustrated
