Knock Detection

As I keep reading about Open Source ECU tuning (free reflashing software for Subaru's and Mitsubishi's), I find more and more information. As much as I want to be able to just flash the Stage 2 maps that are available, they're not as tried-and-true as the Cobb maps, and definitely no where near as confidence-inspiring as an ECUtek tune. A wideband O2 and EGT sensors are pre-requisites for me, but then there's the subject of knock. I had always thought knock detection was done via logging; seeing when knock was occuring (and timing being pulled) and tuning accordingly. That has scared me because I'd rather know I am pinging while it's occurring... not after I do a WOT 4th gear pull and see 30 counts of knock.

Reading the Enginuity forums, I came across a pretty interesting (to me) thread, "Det cans, Knock Link, Knock Lite. Anyone using them?". Basically, has anyone had experience using Knock lights or stethoscope-like devices to pay attention to knock?
A device like this one at the top of the page seems very simple and easy to rig up, so I was thinking of doing so before I start reflashing my car so I can get used to what I should be hearing. The TXS knock lite also looks like it's now on my list, but I'm not sure.
Anyone with any experience tuning their own car feel free to chime in!

edit: ughh sorry I posted this in Engine Performance, I thought I was in Engine Management and tuning... what a noob. Mods please move.

i had a scanmaster on my Grand National...real-time knock detection, worked really really well....i know they have 'em for Subaru's too these days...mine was $200, easy to install and I believe has an option for audible alert

Yeah that looks similar to some of the 'knock boxes' out there for Subie, and the TXS Knock Light.

I'm surprised no one else has responded though

It also monitors tps, o2's, coolant temp, boost (w/ relay), iac, etc....

J&S safeguard is a knock detector that also pulls timing the instant it senses knock.

doesn't every car w/ a knock sensor retard timing? I mean, isn't that the point?

i made my own knock response detection by taping into the boost selenoid that is known to be turned off when knock response happens. might be worth looking into that, to see if its possible to do on a subaru.

here is how i made mine.

Gif-

I have KnockSense (www.viatrack.ca) and it is helpful for a base tune but honestly my WG and motor are loud enough that it pics of vibrations and false knock. However, for a more conventional motor its very useful.

I can show you how it works next time you're around.
