Anyone ever been to Centralia?

This friday the 13th some of my friends and I decided that we're going ghost hunting or exploring some place creepy. I was asking around and found out about Centralia. It's a town in east-central Pennsylvania. Anyway there are large deposits of coal that are burning underground so the government made the residents of the city leave some time back in the mid 80's to early 90's. The place looks like it could be pretty creepy at night. Supposedly the movie Silent Hill was based off of this town or something. In 1962 the population was 1,100 and in 1996 it was down to 46...i've read it's even less now (possible 11 people). I was just wondering if anybody on here has ever checked the placeout.

never heard of it but if there's a motel there you should go up there with some friends, some girls, some alcohol, and a video camera... stay overnight and hopefully you'll see some ghosts. if that doesnt work maybe you'll see some boobs.

i'm checking out that website right now. The whole toxic gas and sink hole thing sort of scares me. I wonder if it's illegal to go snooping around there. The sign just warns you to be careful.

judging from the report that guy wrote up on his webiste, the police didn't seem to mind visitors wondering around...the only thing is one of my friends has to work a little late on friday night so we wont be getting to Centralia until close to 11pm. I can't even begin to imagine what the place will be like at night, especially since we're not going to know where we're going.

Every time someone brings up Centralia I think of that movie Nothing But Trouble with John Candy I have wanted to check it out for a while but I plan on going during the day, don't want to drive the subie into a burning pothole, lol. This site has a few more pics of the place http://www.stuofdoom.com/stuofdoom.html

Its really anti-climactic. I live about 30-45 minutes from there and pass through it on my way to pottsville. The only thing to see is the smoke comming up through the ground. Thats it.

If you go offroading or ride 4 wheelers/dirtbikes than it is definantly worth the trip. There are some very fun hillclimbs in the area. Other than that, you will be let down.

I've been there a few times actually as it's not terribly far from me, about 40-45 minutes. The place isn't all it's cracked up to be. There are many spots where steam and smoke just rises from the ground, and in places the ground is quite warm from the underground fires.

There are still a few people there. Lord only knows why they stayed there, as a lot of the roads are closed off due to them sinking down and breaking apart from the fires. The government offered to buy out the homes from the people to get them to move years ago. Most took the offer but some were stubborn and havent. Pretty much all the houses that remain have support outside to keep them from sinking/leaning.

It's an ok place to check out. I'm not sure how scary it is, but it's kinda eery/creepy.

the one site says they stayed to keep the government from taking over the coal mines and profiting from it.

I used to drive through there all the time on my way up to Bloomsburg.....its not that great actually...some steam n smoke...one stop sign...and some old homes with boards in the windows.

I guess if your looking for something different to do, then take a cruise up there, but i cant imagine there is enough "scary stuff" there to keep you oocuipied for more than an hour or two.

Might be some cool spots for pics tho???

Be careful...

That was one of the funniest things i've heard from Bryan is a while

But I've always wanted to go up and check this town out. Not to see ghosts or whatever but to see what its about.
