and I would rather NOT pay about $100 to do so.... Why is it SO damn expensive? I shopped around and found 80 to be the lowest (of the few places near my house). Of course if you buy the tires from them its like $40 bucks

They are 205.50.15 azenis st615 on a miata... if that matters

because for a shop, its a waste of time to mount tire if their bought somewhere else. it takes about a hour and its just a bunch of BS.

But it still takes the same amount of time and effort with their own tires...

and do I REALLY need new stems? I got new ones last time I had tires put on (a yr ago). Every shop pushed them on me... stupid little 2 dollar items, they can be that profitable.

dont know where u are from creamery tire will prolly give u the best price around, they are the best around here

This is when its nice to have a friend who works at his friends garage...it took now where near an hour to mount and balancec tires, we did it in like 20-30 minutes tops, maybe even less...

As for valve stems if they are fairly new then don't worry about it, just one of those things, its kind of conveient to do when you are mounting new tires but take a look at them do they look like old worn and cracked rubber? if they still look good then don't let them push it on you they aare just trying to make a buck

tell them you'll buy a new tire for your spare and see if they give you a discount mounting all 5

it doesnt pay the bills to mount someone elses tires for free. its an expensive business to be in. on an average month i have between 50-60k $$ in expenses after rent, tech pay, shop supplies, cost of goods sold. plus you take on alot risk when you mount and balance tires. what if the head on the mounting machine scratches your wheels? what if the bead tears when im mounting your tires. for 40 bucks its not really worth it. plus sometimes with the bigger sizes and lower profiles you can spend all morning mounting the things.
that being said ill work with prices at my shop when we have nothing else to do (some money is better than no money). the thing with the valve stems is though that they are cheap insurance. nothing worse than doing a set of tires to have the person come back the next day cause they have a leak from a bad valve stem.

Trust me, i used to M&B tires, and replacing the valve stems is the only way to go.
They only cost 2 bucks each.
You never know if you got a defective one, and sometimes removing the tire can damage the back of the old one.

very true. when you break down a tire you push the tire pass the back side of the valve stem. this can damage it sometimes. you many not even get a leak until a week or more later. so do you wanna pay 20 bucks later for a valve stem that failed or pay the 8 bucks up front. its up to you.

find a small independent shop, they will do it for way less... like uncle bob's auto repair or something lol...

I could do it for you but I would definetly want some cash, because I'd have to do it on my lunch break or afterhours. I wouldn't want anywhere near 100 bucks though.

Thanks, but I just had them mounted. Turns out a gas station / small shop right near my house quoted me the cheapest price around $70.00. Its still more than I wanted to spend, but i needed these tires mounted like yesterday.
