Whats the deal? bovs bad for all turbo cars or what?

A big debate in the Subie world is to bov or not to bov. The bov sounds cool and gives off that head turning turbo sneeze, but through being on the subie-centric boards for close to 3 years I have learned that it is universally understood that a atmostpheric bov hurts the performance of the WRX and the STi by not recirculating already registered air.

Now--- is this only for subies or what? I would imagine that basically a bov would work the same way on a dsm, evo, srt or any aftermarket turbo setup for that matter--- yet I never hear of dsm or srt people talking about how a bov will hurt performance.

So does a bov impede performance on ALL turbo cars or not? Somebody school me...

No a vta bov will only have an adverse effect on a car with a maf sensor. On cars that have a map sensor or speed density having a vta bov will not make any difference in performance.

a BOV hurts performance if it is downstream from the MAF sensor which would be reading more air than isn't actually reaching the motor since you're venting causing the engine to run really rich. a recirculating BOV is a safe and effective way on cars with MAFs to have the BOV and not destroy performance. another way if you want to vent would be to have it upstream of the maf.

bottom line: A VENTING BOV on a car equipped with a maf that is venting air after registering it is BAD ON ALL TURBO CARS. hope that didn't get confusing. its getting late.

When you have a BOV dumping into the atmosphere, that is air that is being blown out of your system instead of being recirculated...

Yeah I came from VW's and it's the same issue with the 1.8t's. I'm not sure about all turbo cars though.

You can VTA with your MAF sensor if you like running rich between shifts and what not... don't do it on your MAF car... recirculate until you have a reason not to.

So what would I have to do to my evo so I can VTA without running rich between shifts?

Am I correct that a blow through maf will eliminate this problem?

ok thats enough. back to the topic at hand.

Dont know if it was explained already but a maf sees how much air is being injested then gives fuel according to that. If it sees air going in then that air excapes through a BOV, you run rich because the fuel is for all of that air, not just the air that didnt go out the BOV.
