Alittle advice on air intake please...

I am looking at getting one for my 94 Golf Mk3. I am a complete noob when it comes to anything related to this. So i was looking for some advice on a brand of one, or if i should start someplace else other than the intake. All comments welcome.

well, you could always take the stock turbo off of the 1.8Ts and run like 5-6 PSI if you want to without anything blowing up on you. Problem is will the manifold and the exhaust mate up and what kind of stand-alone will allow you to run that? Where will you mount the turbo? Is the engine configuration the same? (I don't know much about VWs) Unless the engines are the same you can't use the stock ECU from the 1.8Ts and would have to buy a stand-alone

And also, do the heads follow the same timing, etc etc - there are a lot of things to consider if you want a turbo. It's possible, there are just a lot of things to consider. go on www.vwvortex.com or sites which are similar and ask them there how the engine inter-coorespond.

If it's almost due for a tune-up... do it. It makes a better difference than an intake.

I guess you're in college, Bloomsburg U? If you need a cheap VW mechanic....not extremely too far away is www.metalmanparts.com -- Dennis' labor rate is only $25/hour

Now your speakin my language lol. Yeah im at bloomu. I know the car needs a tune up, it needs some other things too. Im looking to add alittle power, altho i have read that if i get a K&N filter replacement it will give me better results than a intake, and 40 bucks is better than none. Ill have to look him up and see if i can get my car over there some weekend. Thanks alot.

-Dan

Dennis (Marquette) did my Timing belt & replaced my bearings/spindle on my TDI. (I have the 1.8T brakes now)

He works from home & is a 2nd generation VW mechanic (his dad recently retired from Sunbury VW)--- and has a TDI bug FS (iirc, it's Upsolute chip)

It's an intake, take a look at the instruction manual before you pay someone. I threw one in my Jetta and it took all of 35 minutes.

If i got an intake i would do it myself, the mech that he was talkin about is one that is local to me, for tune ups and what not, and is cheap(poor ass college student here)

I was considering that, i have heard only good things. But after doing the research im considering not getting an intake and getting just the air filter replacement, then maybe an ecu....

Cold air was fun on my turbo but you always had to worry about wether the puddle in the road was going to kill your car lol. Short Ram is great if you want that look but if you aren't doing much to the car a filter would be more then adequate.

I'd like to do some things to the car. i just have a very limited budget and knowledge, and lets face it my motor has 130+K miles on it so im not sure much it would be able to take.

Just be careful putting on a cold air. I have a mk4 2005 1/2 GLI. My boyfriend has a 93 passat vr6 and we both work at a vw dealership. I would go with a short ram. Dubs don't like cold air. If your dead set on getting one, get a neuspeed, don't get a aem japanese crap. Dubs don't like cold air for one reason, if your car is lowered, it is raining, where does the cold air sit? Low to the ground. Where does the water go? In the motor. Alll I saying is short ram is the way to go and be careful

Or he could stay away from the puddle suckers and go for like a "Hybrid" intake much like the cobb cold air intake for N/A subies. It goes into the fender but thats it, it doesn't drop down into the fender, just connects to the hole. Are there any like that for VWs?

I had an AEM, never had a problem, never could find out what made one better then the other on a vw. On a Subaru the wrong intake will screw with your A/F but on a veedub I never heard of anything like that. I think it's all personal preference unless you have an actual personal excperience with a certain brand. As far as the hydrolock issue that's a problem with almost every car and cold air intakes (although if you have an n/a car you can get the little piece from AEM that prevents water from making it into the engine). I used to work at a shop that specialized in VW's so I'm very familiar with the three brands I recomended, and he has the right idea with just going with a high flow filter for what he wants.
