Front-mounted intercoolers vs. Hood scoop intercoolers

Ok, so I'm running N/A and I wanna learn some more about turbos.

My questions is: what is the advantage, or disadvantage, to having a front mounted intercooler rather than one that is mounted on top of the engine uner the hood scoop?

Are front mounted intercoolers generally bigger?

The FMIC has the advantage of not being in the engine bay and has more air flow potential. The disadvantage is that it blocks the radiator and has more charge pipes to pressurize.

The TMIC is limited on size and tends to heat soak quickly

yeah fmics will generally make more maximum power but the spool will be slightly slower since there is extra piping involved. by putting the fmic up front there is more room to allow for a bigger core, and it is away from the engine bay so it wont have as much of an issue with heat soak.
the way the wrx and sti are designed, the tmic is actually very good because of the extremely short 'piping' involved, and a lot of aftermarket tmics are excellent for medium sized turbo upgrades.
admittedly i could have kept my tmic, but i was sucked into temptation and traded it for a fmic... cant tell you for sure whether it was a smart move performance wise but i can tell you a lot more people ask me about my car now

I like the sleeper look too, but if he wants 400+awhp the top mount may not work so well.

Hmmm....what about having two intercoolers. the TMIC would be in use at low RPMS and the FMIC at high RPMS. is that even possible?

Wouldnt that just be like the turbo spooling, the air passing through the FMIC, then it going through the TMIC, and finally into the throttle body? Yea turbo lags a bitch.

It Depends what kind of driving your doing. Do you, drive fast on the roads/autocross/roadrace (FMIC). Or do you, rally and all that jazz. (TMIC)

You could rig up an external wastegate as the actuator to open up piping into the FMIC. Like when it opens up use that air in an actuator arm to open a valve into the FMIC which closes the TMIC...

Good luck

if you could do the flat black that the radiator comes painted with (if it's painted or if that's just the color of the metal) that would be pretty sweet. The piping would be hidden behind the fogs so you couldn't really tell.
