DRIFTING...Fill Me In...

I just don't get it, so hear me out and let me know.

I just got around to reading the locked thread (which seemed a little harsh), and it left me curious about drifting. About 10 months ago, I had the stock tires on my car and was "drifting" around the off ramp, smoke and all. My question is, what the hell is the difference between drifting and controlled burnouts? It's basically a prolonged burn-out, or no?

How do people think that it's cool? I could make damn near any rwd car "drift" and just don't understand the point?? Is it just a past time? Although they have competitions, it damn well is no kind of competitive sport.

Somebody fill me in on the craze of drifting, and no offense meant when I say this, but it seems as though it's all the 16 year old ricer/wigger wanna be's and asian group (assuming it's big in asian countries, but not sure where the 16 year old ricer/wiggers fit in).

It takes skill to do a lot of things, like walking and chewing gum at the same time, you know, that kind of stuff. I just don't understand WHY somebody would want to, or think drifting is cool? And for the record, no, I don't think burnouts are cool either. I enjoy egging people on to do them, but laugh at the fact that they're putting their car through some serious abuse, while I'm laughing my ass off.

drifting and control burnout is two different things, you can't compare them...it like apple to orange

drifting take a lot of skill, and many method to do so

Burnout, you can doing with and without braking, and most time on a straight line

The judge, judge drifting by, speed, entrance line, exit line, control, how much g force...etc...it also, considered a sport in america now.

I've never heard of a sport just doing burning out.

And an even better question, when kids on this site claim they are going drifting, what do they do?? Do they just go in a parking lot and "drift" around the entire lot? The whole concept just seems retarded to me (again, no offense, I'm new at this drifting stuff). For instance, if something does something different???? (I don't know how you can do something "different"), do you say, COOL DUDE! THAT WAS AWESOME!! What the **** was awesome?? It's an open parking lot and you are doing a burnout! Whoopty ****ing do!!! Do you have contests between eachother?? Does one person make a turn and spin tires, and the next person try to match it????

WEll, people have to start somewhere to learn, I use to drift in parking lot also. I recommend have a decent LSD. I've start by praticing on around the cone. Drifting around the cone while keeping a 45 degree angle going in circle. And not lose control. Too much speed, will throw you off course, too slow, you will loose the drift.

I dont see it as a kool factory, it definite a skill to learn as a driver.

Also, i see your point of view. it not for everyone, everyone has thier own thing about car...

Any chance that someone has video from this site of a member drifting in a parking lot? I'd love to watch it If not for education purposes, it would most certainly be entertaining

Case and point, burning tires is fun. Burning tires while going 90mph in a controlled slide linking turns keeping the car on the edge of control is even more fun. Spining out out is gay. ( Does'nt take any skill to spin a car around. )

I presonally don't like NASCAR but I'm NOT going around preaching how I think driving around in a circle really fast is stupid either.

I think it's stupid too (nascar), but at least they are RACING.

I guess the best I can come up with after hearing a couple of replies is that drifting is a form of passing time that isn't really competitive at all. I guess I could compare it to ballet, maybe that's a better analogy.

are you trying to learn about drifting, or are you trying to give domestic owners a reputation for being ignorant? because i'm not sure right now...
if you want to see what drifting is all about you should go to etown one night when they have their drift sessions... if ot bores you walk over to the track. its the kind of thing that only a good video or seeing it in person can really explain it for you.

I'm confused, don't domestic owners drift too?? I just watched ford probes drift, so I know for a fact they do (or are you counting their engines as not being domestic)?

Troll, did you watch the video I posted that was linked from the other thread???

http://videos.streetfire.net/search/...7c066afbd3.htm

Can you seriously sit there and tell me what is cool about it? I am trying to learn but looking at stuff like that makes me laugh.

There HAS to be more than that

And drunk usually equals being ignorant, but I am still curious abou this whole thing. Is it a sanctioned thing that they actually have at etown??? Like I said, fill me in...

And by the way, I'm a pretty ignorant person as it is, and I don't think it has anything to do with being a domestic owner as I think the cars a piece of crap (build and finish quality, same goes for GM, Dodge brands, and most all other domestics), hence the reason it's for sale. BUT, I AM willing to learn and welcome the chance for people to teach me or try and teach me so I'm not so ignorant.

That video is just messing around. Look around for Formula D videos or D1 videos and stuff like that if you really want to see what it's all about.

There are events at e-town on the last wednesday of every month. We set up courses with cones and bigass styrafoam blocks and people run them.

Drifting isn't just coming out of a turn and power sliding. It's a lot more about the entry and connecting the turns. Anyone with a rwd car and some power can smoke the tires coming out of the turn. But entering a turn at 80+ mph and sideways is something completely different.

basically, if you ain't outta control, then you ain't in control. LOL

but seriously, i suppose drifting is suppose to demonstrate the power and stability of your car by not only purposely putting it into a curve at an agressive angle, but bringing it out of the curve and correcting the angle of the car. if you have two curves lined up (ie S-curve) and u correct your cars angle coming out of the 1st curve and then immediatly put your car in a new angle while you enter curve #2 it looks very good. I, personally, think good drifting takes talent and is fun to watch. I've never driven a RWD car so I wouldn't be able to judge how easy it is to drift in one.

It sure beats NASCAR.
