WHAT IS A DRVING SCHOOL:

Let me start with what a Driving School is not. Even though you are on a racetrack, with 30 other drivers of similar driving skills, it is not a race. Passing in corners is not allowed, and you are not expected to shift at redline, or go screaming through each corner with the tires squealing. The purpose of a driving school is quite simple: to improve your driving skills. We will emphasize the relationship of driver and machine, making them function in unison and giving you, as a student, the opportunity to learn your limitations and expand your capabilities, thus creating safe driving skills and habits in a controlled situation. It is hoped that what you learn will benefit you in your day-to-day driving, especially when confronted with emergency situations.

Safety of the event is of the utmost importance. Driver conduct will be diligently monitored throughout the day by GVC staff, instructors, and WGI corner workers. Infractions of the rules will not be tolerated, and could result in dismissal from the school.

Our schools consists of about 120 students (4 groups of 30 students). Your day is divided between driving on the track, classroom sessions, or free time. What you learn on the track depends on your driving skill. Beginners are taught driving style (smoothness, consistency, the ability to read the track), more experienced participants continue to work on consistency, while developing new skills such as trail-braking, and threshold braking. For the most experienced people, a driving school is mostly 'track time', where students are allowed to drive solo, but they are still encouraged to learn new skills from our instructors.

Every time you are on the track, you will have an experienced instructor in the passenger seat until you are 'signed off'. You can be signed off when you have proven to your instructor that you understand the basics of high speed driving, and you can consistently drive the correct line.

In the classroom, you learn high speed driving theory. You learn everything from 'why low-profile tires are better', to what is the difference between an early and late apex. Car physics, such as what is really happening when I brake or why my car understeers or oversteers is also discussed. Each classroom normally ends with a question and answer session.

What's required to do a Drivers School ?

In order to participate in a drivers school, your car must pass a safety inspection, and you need a Snell 95 rated helmet. (see below). This is mandated to us by Watkins Glen and our Insurance company.

Car
The idea behind Driving Schools is to make YOU a better driver. You don't need a race prepared BMW M3 to do a driving school. You will learn to drive what you own. Since the Watkins Glen Schools are put on by the BMW club, most of the cars there are BMW's. But we also have Porsche's, Corvettes, VW Rabbits, and Honda Accords. It really doesn't matter. (but there is a price break if you are a club member). We are no longer accepting convertibles.

Your car must be in good shape. Driving on a track can put extra stress on a car. Brakes are very important, and you should be able to 'trust' your car. If you fix your car with duct tape, gum, and bailing wire, your car won't pass the technical inspection that must be performed.

Technical Inspection
After your acceptance to a Watkins Glen Drivers School, we send you a 'tech form' that must be filled out by your dealer, your local garage, or even yourself. It usually doesn't take more than 20 minutes at a dealer. Many dealers will provide this service for free, while some will charge you a nominal cost, such as $20.

This 'tech form' is used to check the road worthiness of your car. It consists of items such a brake pad thickness, batteries securely held down, no major cracks in the windshield, working headlights and brake lights, and no oil, gas, or antifreeze leaks.

Helmets
We do not recommend that a person attending their first school go out and buy a new helmet before their first event. After all, helmets are expensive ($150 - $400), and you many not ever do another school (but I doubt it). If it is at all possible, try to borrow a helmet from one of your friends, just remember that it must be Snell '95 (or newer) rated. The club doesn't have any helmets to loan out - blame that on the lawyers.

Thanks for the event reminder.
Weekdays are not good for me.
I'd have to followup on the next one for Sept 30.
