i dont know. I only drive 8 miles to work but i drive past a state police barracks every day so i always see cops but on the weekend i drive over 2 hours to Rockaway to work on my car at CCP and I drive around 40 miles on the turnpike and 40 on 287 and hardly ever see any. I just do 75-80 (still slower then most haha) on those to roads and about 5 mph on my local streets. no real reason for them to pull me over so i dont worry about it.

its not legal. that is why he asked you to open it and didn't tell you to open it. I have been pulled over by a state trooper rookie (you can tell by the attitude ha) for no plate on the front of my car (I drove my truck for 1 year and 9 months with no tags and state police never pulled me over for it) and when he saw that the inside of my car was totally gutted, he didn't say a thing and just looked at my inspection sticker. Prick gave me a warning for having my radar detector on my windshield saying it was in the line of sight. Yeah, ok. It was in the line of sight of my hood. Dumb twat. He was just made because I had one and he knows he can't do **** about them I guess. I use it so that if I ever get pulled over and the officer trys to tell me I was speeding, I will at the least know if he was even running radar because ussually it is way to late to slow down once it does go off. I use it to keep me and the police honest, not to speed and try to get away with it.
