Anyone know anything about Praying Mantis?

I went outside to my car and I saw a giant brown thing on the windshield and it gave me a heart attack because I thought it was a huge spider but upon closer inspection it was a praying mantis so I ran back into my house and grabbed a jar, ran back to my car and caught it. I wanna keep it now but I don't know what to do first. Should I put leaves and twigs in there? Do mantis's need/drink water? Its about 2.5 inches long and a little less than q quarter inch wide so what type of bugs should I throw in there with him ants or crickets? Do they emit a smell because I think it's starting to smell...not bad but weird..

Any help is appreciated, thank you. For those of you who are thinking I should search google I have. I know they eat each other and the largest ones can grow up to 6.5 inches long but it doesn't answer these questions.....except for the food problem but I don't know what type of bugs to put in there.

Thanks again

As you may know, preying mantis's are endangered it is illegal to kill them. I would say just release it back into the wild

....plus, keeping an insect like a pet is kinda weird

Let him go! They are awesome "insects" in the wild and can fend for themselves. If you see them, be thankfull you have something to eat some of the bugs around your house.

Well you guys all suck. I let it go because you all made me feel guilty, catching it made me happier than getting my 19" csl rims since it was the 2nd one I ever saw in my life but I geuss I can buy some of those mantis they have at labs. It gave me a heart attack because it jumped lol. Anyway yea I usually kill insects except for a few and it would make me sad if a praying mantis died.....that and stag beetles.

I took pictures of him leaving

Bye Pnut

looks cool but he def would have died if you kept him in a 'cage' so you can be happy that you made the decision to let him live on

I think the brown ones are the females anyway, best not to keep one of those in the house as it might be preggers.

I've found a few of them, one a baby about an inch or two long, on the wall of my sisters room...yeah, in the house.

They are cool critters, but they're definatly not pets.

All insects and arachnids and creepy crawlers freak me out except for the praying mantis and stag beetle lol. I am super afraid of Spiders because Because Spiders bite sometimes, They are hairy, they have 8 legs and eyes, they have fangs, the only Spider I like is Spiderman. I also am deftly afraid of cochroaches.

At my work we've had 3 mantis cocoons or whatever hatch inside of jars because we find them on the plants that are for sale...and we def don't want someone buying plants nad having about 1,000 baby praying mantis running around. I'll post pics in a little bit. It was crazy how many there were

Edit: here's just a few of the ones from one egg sack that i took home to let go in my yard in hopes of seeing them agian. Pics were taken with cell phone

Now I cant even find them in these 2 pictures but oh well.
