Turbo setup getting closer (pix)
![]() ![]() We finally are getting used to the TIG machine I made an up pipe to top mount my turbo. TIG'd stainless steel 304-L piping. The welds are not cleaned completely yet and need a final pass, but its almost here ![]()

i'm most impressed that you're doing the work yourself. lucky as hell to have access to those kinds of tools.
i think i asked in another thread, but are you concerned about spool/efficiency with an 'uppipe' now in the system. i love my subaru but as far as i know the uppipe is a bit of a disadvantage since the turbo isnt right off the manifold. i'm sure you know plenty about it from this project so just wondering about your thoughts there. bryan

Well if you look at it this way...
STS makes remote mount turbo kits where the turbo mounts where the muffler would be. They use decent sized T4s and such and the "manifold" is basically an entire exhaust system. The lag is not very noticeable because in an exhaust you have constant pressure whether or not the car is idle or screaming. Additionally, my turbo has a split vane exhaust housing that utilizes two "channels" to spool better but my turbo manifold is only a single vane outlet, so my turbo in theory would not utilize that because the exhaust pulses are present when the turbo is so close and they aren't being split into the seperate vanes. Now, with an up pipe, the pipe itself acts as a "muffler" if you will that will effectively collect the pulses and feed them to the turbo in a more linear manner... so the vanes are going to see unpulsing exhaust... which will help it spool in matter of fact. I really foresee no issue with this setup as there are guys that run up pipes on BMWs to the opposite side of the motor and still make 800+ whp.
